Term 3 - 31 January 2025

Dear Parent/Carer

With just six days to go until opening night, there is a palpable excitement around the school from those taking to the stage in Mary Poppins Jr, our annual school production. Tickets are selling fast but are still available via ParentPay. Family and friends all welcome.

Year 13 cast and crew members will be juggling their stage appearances with revision for their mock examinations which start on  Monday 10 February. We can see how much work is going into revision: thanks to all parents for their encouragement, endless supply of revision snacks and motivation!

If you are the parent of a child in Year 9 we look forward to welcoming you to the Key Stage 4 options information evening on Wednesday 5 February 16.00-18.30. This is an opportunity to chat to Subject Leaders and teachers of subjects  (both optional and core) about the GCSE courses in all the subjects we offer, or are considering offering next year. The evening is informal, takes the format of a marketplace where you can find out about as many or as few subjects as you like, and sixth form students are also on hand to describe their recent experiences of studying the GCSE courses. We hope it will be informative for you and your child. If you can't make it or would like to revisit the information shared with students so far, do look at our website pages Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Options Process which contain an information booklet and also a recording of an assembly given to students by Mrs White Assistant Headteacher – Curriculum which we have posted on our school You Tube channel Year 9 Options Assembly 2025

I look forward to welcoming you to the school this week.

Mrs J Smith
Headteacher

EVOLVE Clubs

At KSHS we have invested in EVOLVEclubs, which allows us to support both the staff running clubs and events, and the students. Last week students all had the opportunity to browse the programme of events for this term, and using this platform to sign-up to clubs which piqued their interest. Please do speak to your child about what clubs they are looking forward to this term and encourage them to get involved.

We believe that participating in activities outside of the classroom adds significant value not only to a student's time at school but also through their life. Research suggests that extra-curricular activities are important in developing soft (especially social) skills as well as being associated with a range of other positive outcomes (e.g. achievement, attendance at school). Extra-curricular activities are also hugely valuable to young people themselves in ways that are not quantifiable. Extra-curricular activities boost young people’s confidence to interact socially with others; extend their social networks; and provide them with new skills and abilities. Above all, they offer an important space to have fun and relax away from the pressures of schoolwork.

Assistant Headteacher – Teaching and Learning

Psychology News

Group of Psychology students at Lincoln University.

On Wednesday 15 January Year 12 Psychology students had the opportunity to ‘Be Inspired’ about Criminal Justice at Lincoln University. Students attended workshops run by specialists in a variety of subjects, all with a connection to the Criminal Justice System.

In the Psychology session students learnt about profiling and had a go at interviewing an offender. In Criminology they learnt about the different purpose of prisons and had a go at designing their own. In the Forensic Science lesson, they learnt how to read fingerprints and analyse blood samples. In the Law workshop students learnt about behaviour that does and does not constitute a crime; and factors that make criminal behaviour ‘worse’ or ‘better’ than others.

In addition to increased subject knowledge, students also experienced what it was like to study at university, achieved a greater awareness of the multi-disciplinary nature of subjects in the world of work, and obtained ideas for potential future careers. Overall, this was a very informative and enjoyable day.

Maths News

In the January issue of Advanced Mathematics Support Programme's Quick Maths for Year 11 students, important topics such as revision and potential future careers are covered.

Students will have the chance to read about other young people’s experiences beyond GCSE and share their tips and tricks on how to navigate post-16 maths.

Art News

We are really proud of Year 12 art student Tabitha, who took part in the regional final of the Articulation Prize at The Hub in Sleaford on Thursday.

The Articulation Prize invites students aged 16-19 to deliver a 10-minute presentation on a work of art, architecture, or an artefact of their choice in front of an audience and adjudicator at museums and galleries. Adjudicators select one speaker to go through to the grand final which unites all regional finalists.

All young people who take part in the competition are invited to join the Alumni programme. Alumni are given opportunities to gain work experience, to speak in public, to write for publications, and to join training and mentoring schemes.

Sleaford Twinning Opportunities

The Sleaford and District Twinning Association is once again offering the chance to take part in the association’s visits to our twin towns in Germany and France. This would be a really excellent chance to improve your German or French! Several Sleaford students took part last year and the events were a great success.

For students interested in taking part this year, the association will subsidise the cost to new student travellers by 50% so the price for students who haven't been on a previous twinning association trip would be £110 for Marquette in France and £165 for Fredersdorf-Vogelsdorf in Germany. More details on the Sleaford Twinning website Sleaford Twinning Association - Partnerships in Europe or see the poster below.

Welcome to our New Staff

Hello! My name is Mrs Mattison and I am really excited to be joining KSHS as a Learning Support Assistant. I have previously worked at schools in Grantham as a cover supervisor and most recently in the exams and data office.

Outside of school I really enjoy being outdoors and love to run and go for walks with my dog. I also enjoy spending time with my family and travelling.
