Term 2  -  03 December 2021

Dear Parents and Carers

As the end of term approaches, I’m pleased to report that we have as few as 5 students and staff isolating due to unconnected Covid cases. This means we feel able to continue with our evening Carol Concert next Wednesday and our St Denys’ Carol Service on the last day of term. We have however taken the difficult decision to cancel our Senior Prizegiving event on the evening of 16 December. We feel it is prudent to avoid a gathering with so many visitors to the school, coming from so many geographical locations, given concerns about the new Omicron variant.

More details on our end of term arrangements and our Lateral flow testing arrangements for the start of term 3 will follow in a separate letter next week.

SAFEGUARDING UPATES FOR PARENTS AND CARERS

Keeping your children safe online

As part of our work with our safeguarding partners we have been asked to share information with parents/carers about inappropriate content online. Over the last 12 months LCC (Lincolnshire County Council) have seen an increase in the number of schools reporting that students, while at home, have accessed content which is not always appropriate, some of which has been quite scary or upsetting. While there is no perfect way to eliminate this risk, they feel that there are things parents and carers can do to support their children online, reduce the risk or manage it after the fact. Here are some of the practical steps parents and carers can follow:

  • Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP): Companies that provide broadband such as BT, Sky and Virgin, offer free protection for parents and carers. They can filter your internet connection directly, without having to install anything. Guides on how to use this can be found here: https://www.internetmatters.org/parental-controls/broadband-mobile/
  • YouTube is a fantastic resource, but not all the content is appropriate for children and not all YouTube channels are made for young audiences. YouTube has an app just for children – YouTube Kids – but many people don't realise that the main YouTube app has a restricted mode. Check out more about how it works here:

https://www.internetmatters.org/parental-controls/entertainment-search-engines/youtube-app/

  • Games consoles have features that can limit what games they can play based on the age ratings and can even turn off certain features to allow gaming to be a little safer. To learn more about these features visit https://www.internetmatters.org/parental-controls/gaming-consoles/
  • Games are also rated based on the content; not how difficult they are. 18 rated games can have very graphic violence, adult language and themes, sexual content and horror elements. Learn a bit more about appropriate games by visiting https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/articles/gaming-whats-appropriate-for-your-child/  or visit this site for more about game ratings https://parentzone.org.uk/article/pegi-games-ratings-explained

It's important to remember that no filters or controls are 100% effective so make sure your child knows that they can, and should, talk to someone if they see or hear anything upsetting online so we can offer them some reassurance. This information from Thinkuknow might be useful https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/articles/Im-worried-my-primary-aged-child-might-see-something-inappropriate-online/

Domestic Abuse Support: 16 days of action to raise awareness of domestic abuse

This nationwide campaign spans 16 days from 25 November to 10 December with the aim of increasing awareness and education of domestic abuse in our communities. EDAN Lincs is a Lincolnshire based charity with their head office in Lincoln. They offer a wide range of support, including refuges, outreach and other services throughout the county. They are running a social media campaign and appealing to many different organisations – businesses; schools; community groups as well as individuals, to take some action for EDAN Lincs.

Any action that you take over these 16 days to raise donations or to share information will support this national campaign and have a very real local impact for those in your community who may be suffering the effects of domestic abuse.  Even the smallest action can make a difference.  If you are interested please contact annad@edanlincs.org.uk

Primark store in Lincoln has chosen EDAN Lincs as a charity of the year and they are holding a special late night Christmas shopping event with raffle prizes etc on Tuesday 7 December with a purpose of raising money for EDAN Lincs - shop will be open from 6pm till 8.30pm. Entry is with a free ticket - it can be booked here, with donations to be asked for on the door as you enter.

Free Christmas Holiday Clubs

Did you know that Lincolnshire County Council are offering free holiday clubs to all children and young people eligible for benefits-related free school meals. Please see the poster for more details on how to access this opportunity.  To find out more visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk

What parents and carers need to know about cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency’s availability – and influence – has grown exponentially since Bitcoin debuted in 2009. Little over a decade later, there are more than 5,000 different types of cryptocurrency on the market. Some, of course, are more successful than others – but the concept has now established a sufficiently robust beachhead to thrive in the coming years. This means, naturally, that cryptocurrency will be embedded even more deeply in our culture by the time today’s schoolchildren are grown. It’s incumbent on the trusted adults of today, then, to begin equipping young people for this new method of carrying out transactions online. This week’s guide brings parents and carers the essentials on cryptocurrency.

Face Coverings on School Buses

Further to the weekend guidance from central government recommending that pupils should wear a face covering on school transport, the Council has updated its 'Information for Parents and Carers' webpage.

  • It is mandatory to wear a face covering on public transport unless exemptions apply.
  • The government recommends that pupils age 11 and over wear a face covering when travelling on dedicated school transport to school or college.
  • The Council recommends that children under the age of 11 wear a face covering where possible.

Lincolnshire County Council are committed to making dedicated school transport as safe as possible for pupils. We are aware many pupils have stopped wearing face coverings on school transport this term. We therefore request your support in encouraging compliance from your child(ren) with the latest recommendations.
