Term 6 - 21 June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome to this fortnight’s newsletter with a great article by Ava in Year 9 reporting on the Year group’s trip to France. Year 8 parents might be interested to know that next year’s trip is already in the planning as we start to put the 2024-2025 school calendar together. Those of you who are teachers will know how much planning goes into educational trips, especially residential ones abroad with over 100 students so the emails of thanks from parents were very much appreciated.

Thank you too to the parents who responded to my letter consulting you on face to face or online parents’ evenings next academic year. We have received 129 responses so far with an even spread of responses across year groups. If you haven’t completed the 2-minute survey, you are invited to do so by Tuesday 25 June.  Please click here.

In this edition you will see mention of our Year 5 taster days. It was lovely to meet so many prospective parents at the school date on both days. Next Friday we will welcome our incoming Year 7 students into school with a parent induction meeting on Tuesday evening. Next year sees another five form entry into the school with children joining us from 49 different feeder primary schools. Many of our staff have visited the new Year 7s in their primary schools to give them a chance to ask questions in small groups and in familiar surroundings.

And finally, the week after next sees our Open day and Open evening events. If you know any prospective parents interested in visiting the school at work they can book onto the open days here Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Home (kshs.uk). The school will be open with student tours and staff available on 2 July from 5-7pm with my Headteacher presentation at 5pm.  Thanks again if you are taxiing your child to the event. Do come and say hello when you pick them up.

Mrs J Smith
Headteacher

Tragic News

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of a Robert Carre Trust student, based at Carre’s who died in a car accident yesterday. We are truly devastated by this loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.  Three other Carre’s students were in the car with him, and at the time of writing one remains in a critical condition, and all are likely to remain in hospital for some time.

We encourage open communication with your child about their feelings and emotions surrounding this loss. It is important to provide them with a safe space to grieve and express themselves in a healthy way.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the student. May they find comfort and peace in the memories shared and the love that surrounds them.

Sponsored Walk

School Sponsored Walk – Friday 12 July 2024

We are pleased to celebrate the return of the Robert Carre Trust Sponsored Walk which takes place on Friday 12 July and involves all students in current Years 7-10 and 12. This will be most students’ first experience of a pre-Covid annual event that raises funds both for charities nominated by students as well as projects in school where we can make students experiences just that bit better with some additional funding. Students are in the process of deciding on a charity per year group and the funds raised by KSHS students will go to improving Sports facilities in the Sports Hall as well we hope as providing a bigger budget for the next whole school production. We hope that parents will support their child(ren) to raise sponsor money using this link  Click here to donate:  Robert Carre Trust (parentpay.com) .  Please include the word “sponsored walk” in the reference.  The event was launched to students in assembly yesterday and prizes including pizza lunches, non-uniform days and KSHS scratchcards will be awarded to the form group in each year which raises most money. Please see the separate letter for further details and thank you in advance for your support.

History News

Term 6 got off to a wonderful start for the MFL and History Departments as we took our annual trip to France and Belgium to visit the sites of World War One and gain some cultural experience, eating snails and ordering ice creams!

You can read an account below of our trip by our wonderful Year 9 linguists and historians.

We want to thank Year 9 for being such a fabulously behaved group – everywhere we went people complimented how well-behaved and polite students were which made us very proud! We also want to thank The Student Services Team for all of the behind the scenes work in helping us to go on the trip and the ten amazing staff who gave up their time to come on the trip with us and provide Year 9 with such a wonderful experience.

The 2024 Year 9 France/Belgium Trip was the educational experience of our school careers. Not only did it develop our cultural knowledge but cultivated our proficiency in many areas of the curriculum (such as French, History, Geography and problem-solving skills from Maths). The excursion, organised by Mrs Samworth and Miss Gray, was a 4 day tour that was both leisurely and educational.

On day one we travelled over to France and Belgium by coach. After we arrived, we went to Passchendaele Museum where we learnt about the third battles of Ypres; we went around the mock trench systems which was very interesting. After visiting Passchendaele, we went to Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial where two students found relatives and the school left a wreath in memory. We also went to Langemark the German cemetery; we found the mass grave shocking.

On day two in the morning, we visited the Wellington Quarry and went through some of the quarry on a guided tour, we also visited the supermarket to have a go at speaking some French which was very enjoyable. In the afternoon we visited Thiepval memorial. It was a very moving experience as it commemorated those who died but were never found. It was slightly heartwarming though to see those whose names had been removed as their body was found and given a proper grave and burial.

The Last Post was an interesting experience as it was both sombre to remember the dead but also pleasant to know that every single soldier that died in the war would be remembered.

On day three of the France Belgium trip, we went to a snail farm and Le Touquet. At the snail farm we learnt about the different parts of snails and how they are farmed, practised our French and even got to try a snail at the end. We were also allowed to buy items from the gift shop. After the snail farm, we drove to Le Touquet. At the beach, everyone enjoyed their lunch - supplied by the hostel - and the warm weather. After around an hour, the students set off in groups to do a small scavenger hunt around Le Touquet which took them around the majority of the town. Students were also given money to buy ice creams and souvenirs from shops around the town.

Once back at the hostel, we had a nice meal and some time in our rooms. After a bit of time to ourselves we met with friends for entertainment like playing games and watching the football.

On day four, we went into Ypres and the chocolate shop. We walked into town and were given an hour to go around shops and stalls. Then we met in the town centre for a group picture and then went to the chocolate shop. We spent the rest of the day enjoying our journey back with our friends and teachers with the occasional stop to break up the journey.

Duke of Edinburgh

Our Silver DofE assessed expedition was a great experience, one that was made possible by the Lupine expedition leaders and the school's own staff. Throughout the 3 days of hills, cows and weather that could not seem to make its mind up, our small group was always willing to keep going towards the goal of a slightly uncomfortable tent. As a group we walked well, setting a good pace and quickly finished each day, allowing us to set up tents and cook dinner before the imminent evening downpour.

Our group leader Rob was helpful and friendly, also helping us collect small gifts for our teachers during our last day of walking. Spirits didn't falter (helped by the constant singing), and despite the challenging weekend many of us consider Gold DofE to be a possibility in the upcoming years.

Our Duke of Edinburgh experience was full of many challenges, which as a team we overcame and turned into memories. The expedition takes determination, commitment and strength. An important thing to remember is that you need to stay away from cows with calves. most cows are only curious and don’t actually want to harm you. Bringing lots of layers is a key as in the night you get cold. Don’t overpack your bag as you have to carry it for three days although as you do each day your bag gets lighter. Make sure that you put your tent up properly as if you don’t you will probably get wet if its rains (we did on the practice). Take loads of snacks and make sure to keep drinking water as when you are hungry or get slightly dehydrated you start to lack concentration and it makes it harder for you to walk for the full day. Always make sure the other people in your team are okay and check on them regularly. It was a great experience and happy that we all passed.

Year 5 Taster Days

We welcomed 200 Year 5 pupils from local primary schools last week for 2 taster days. Using classrooms and teaching staff normally used for Year 11 and 13 who are now on exam leave, we gave Year 5 pupils from around 50 primary schools the chance to see what life at KSHS might be like.

Growth Mindset

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
