Term 6 - 7 June 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

This year seems to have flown by and I find myself welcoming you to term 6 already! It’s always a great term in school for students with trips and visits, field work, and local community events  whether that’s the Riverlight festival for our artists, D of E expeditions for our Key Stage 4 students or the French trip for Year 9. Year 7 will soon be off for fieldwork in Skegness as well as a History trip to Warwick Castle. Year 8 and 10 have a STEM day coming up.

One of our big school events this year is the whole school sponsored walk on Friday 12 July. We will send further details in a separate letter to all parents of Years 7-10 and Year 12 students. Please look out for this. It is our biggest fundraising event of the year and a lovely community day when students from both Carre’s and the High School enjoy fresh air, camaraderie and typically a few energy giving snacks!

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all parents of Year 11 and 13 for their support during the external exams season. Family life and especially the May half term can seem dominated by revision programmes and preparation, so thank you for the quizzing, flashcard checking and brain food supplying undertaken.

Thanks too in advance if you are being a parent taxi to support your child’s participation in the Open evening coming up on 2 July. Prospective parents and Year 5 students get such a good insight into what it’s like to be a student at the school from our student tour guides but I realise that as an evening event (5-7pm) we rely on parents to transport their children home at the end of the evening.

Finally please look out for letter next week inviting all parents to share their views on parents evening provision next year. I'd really appreciate your input.

Thank you!

Mrs J Smith
Headteacher

KSHS students celebrate their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award achievements

Celebrating our Gold Duke of Edinburgh award at Buckingham Palace was an incredible opportunity. Thankfully, the weather held out for us and we were able to explore the palace gardens and listen to the stories of several famous people, including Prince Edward himself.

Personally, we loved hearing from Tim Peake and his experiences in astronaut training and life on the International Space Station. I wouldn’t quite compare walking through a field of angry cows on DofE a spacewalk, but it was interesting to hear how the skills we have gained are the foundations of what it takes to become an astronaut.

We are grateful for not only this day but the entire DofE experience, the skills and opportunities we have gained from it. Therefore, we are so thankful to all the volunteers who have given up their time to support this amazing scheme that has shaped so many lives, including our own.

Will and Hannah

Monday 13 May was a very important day, as I celebrated achieving my Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Gold Award in the gardens of Buckingham Palace. Arriving at the gates was quite surreal, with tourists lining the security cordons to watch who was going into the palace. As we headed through security, we went past the Palace, stopping for a photo and into the gardens. The gardens were vast, and decked out with giant deckchairs, signs, games on the lawn and two military band - so we had continuous music.

We listened to speeches from the Duke of Edinburgh, Tim Peak and Hafwen Clarke, a DofE participant from Wales, who at 19 became the first young person in the DofE's history to give a speech in British Sign Language at a Gold Awards celebration. All 3 speeches were fantastic and each reflected on the fact that it's easy to say you 'could' do the award but quite different to say you 'have' done it.

There were 3 stages around the garden with different speakers at each including Harry and Emma Judd, Fats Timbo, Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton, Frank Gardner OBE, Cherish Finden and Ellis Ranson. I was very pleased to meet Cherish Finden from Bake Off the professionals. She was lovely in real life and happily chatted to me telling me to tag her next time I baked a cake.

It was a lovely occasion, a chance to celebrate the achievement and reflect on how much we had to do for it. I was lucky to meet up with Charlotte G, another KSHS student and one of the team I did my Gold expedition with. It was great to share this experience with her too.

Bereavement Support

In a community of over 800 young people and staff, it is inevitable that there will be times when we need to support students grieving for a loved one. Sadly in the past few weeks, a small number of KSHS students have lost parents in tragic circumstances.

Ninety-two percent of children and young people will experience a 'significant' bereavement before the age of 16 and 1 in 25 school-year-aged children will have been bereaved of a parent or sibling, according to the charity Winston's Wish. Therefore, bereavement is, or will be, an issue for the majority of children and young people before they leave statutory school age.

Children may experience a range of intense emotions, including sadness, anger, confusion, and fear, whilst adolescents might struggle with more complex emotions and existential questions about life and death. Please be reassured that we are here for all our students and staff whatever their level of grief, however and whenever, it manifests itself. We also have several Mental Health First Aid trained staff on hand to support all our young people and for students really struggling with grief and loss, access to external support through our top tier of mental health support in school.

It's a World of Work......

{item_alt_tag}

Year 9 had the opportunity to meet different professionals working in a variety of different jobs as part of the school’s careers programme.

On Wednesday 22 May, Year 9 were introduced to a ‘World of Work’ day, that had been organised and executed by Miss Chant, to give a valuable insight into a future of possible careers.

The day followed this structure: The year group assembled for a talk from Miss Chant to introduce the day, with a quiz on which teachers had had previous careers, and information about who would be speaking. Nine adults, all experienced professionals and working in sectors including manufacturing, medicine, and accounting, would each give a half hour talk on their career and what it involved, including routes into the profession.

To make sure that we all got the best out of this experience, Year 9 were encouraged to ask as many questions as possible (with the added motivation of winning a packet of sweets or raffle tickets to go into a voucher-winning prize draw in each session, asking questions was getting quite competitive!). We were also given a booklet containing extra information about the day, as well as space to fill out a ‘fact-file’ about each employer that we had a talk from. This helped us know what questions to ask and gave us sufficient knowledge to consider a career in that industry.

For 9A, the morning consisted of talks from a respiratory consultant, a manufacturing executive and chartered accountant, followed by a keynote speaker from the East Midlands Ambulance Service before lunch. The afternoon included a dentist, writer, veterinary surgeon and osteopath, sparking lots of interest. Each talk was different, as was each industry represented, and the day was definitely very interesting and helpful.

Year 9 would like to thank everyone who came in to share their incredible knowledge with us, as well as Miss Chant and all the members of staff who organised the day, for such a valuable opportunity!

Budding Playwrights!

The NewViews playwriting programme and competition has finished for this year, but I just wanted to share with the KSHS community how proud I am of the students who submitted a play to our dramaturg, Stuart Melton.

In his feedback to the students, Stuart described their work as ‘thought -provoking’, ‘richly imagined’, ‘brave and unflinching’ and ‘lively and authentic’.   High praise indeed!

I am delighted to share with you that Nancy Threapleton’s play was selected for the ‘long list’ of plays put forward to the National Theatre panel.

Taking part in the NewViews programme is not for the faint hearted – it requires dedication and perseverance to work independently, for several months, in one’s own time.

Students are supported through a weekly guidance session and meetings with a dramaturg, but ultimately the production of a completed play is their own personal triumph.

So, my heart-felt congratulations to Nancy Threapleton, Lily Samuell, Tilly McIlwaine and Lily Rose Harris who all submitted entries to the competition.

Finally, the English Department aim to offer the opportunity to take part in the competition, to Year 10 and Year 12 students, in the next academic year.

House Competition updates

The Term 5 totals are below with Lovedon overtaking Flaxwell in the Quiz points......as we build up to the end of the school year, there will be a few further opportunities for students to accrue house points for their work, as well as, of course, preparing for sports’ day.

KSHS Local Governance Tier

Kesteven & Sleaford High School Local Governance Tier

The recent call-out for nominations for a Parent Governor unfortunately drew no nominations. The Chair and other Governors are currently considering options.

Robert Carre Trust

But, Members have appointed two new Trustees to the Robert Carre Trust Board , Richard Eaton and Simon Enstone, who have joined the Board with immediate effect. Simon's appointment as a Trustee leaves a vacancy for a Community Governor - if you know of anyone who may be interested in this role, please contact me at debbie.scott@robertcarretrust.uk.

The Trust would like to thank Aby Barker who has worked as both a Local Governor for KSHS and latterly as a Trustee. Work commitments mean she has stepped away from this role for us.

Further details of the Board can be found on the RCT website - Robert Carre Trust - Governance
