Term 5 - 17 May 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

It's been another busy couple of weeks in school with lots of fantastic examples of students demonstrating resilience, courage and determination. Congratulations to all our Year 9 Bronze DofE students who completed their assessed expedition around Sherwood Forest last weekend. Along with our expedition provider, Lupine Adventures and school staff and volunteers, students demonstrated that come rain or shine they can work well as a team, push through tiredness and blisters and sleep under canvas after a camp cooked meal. My thanks to Mrs Banks, Mrs Brown, Mrs Renard and Mrs Watts as well as Mrs Robertson for their support of all our students. Many in Year 9 are now looking forward to the History and French trip to France and Belgium after half-term. Meanwhile, Gold DofE students are off on their practice expedition in half-term and ‘Silvers’ are preparing for their assessed expedition in June. Good luck to them all!

Courage and determination have also been shown in the examination room with Year 11 and Year 13 GCSEs and A levels well underway. It’s been so impressive to see students coming out of the hall feeling a mixture of relief but also personal pride, knowing they have done their very best. I know as a parent just how much the exam period dominates family life too, so thank you for all your support at home. And in their worlds Year 7 have been taking their assessment week seriously with Year 8s getting prepared for next week.  I hope they are just as proud of themselves as our intrepid explorers and our older examination students!

Duke of Edinburgh

Last weekend, 57 DofE Bronze award students set off on a 2 day 1 night assessed expedition covering approximately 15km per day, for a duration of 6 hours. Starting the day at Clumber park they walked through Sherwood forest area to reach the campsite. All 9 groups arrived safely at the end point in Bilsthorpe tired, exhausted and with sore feet but, most importantly, with a big smile on their faces!

Library and Literacy News

On Tuesday 30 April, an enthusiastic group of Year 8s and 9s got the opportunity to take part in a journalism workshop run by Sally Walker, an award-winning journalist with 25 years of experience reporting and writing for newspapers and magazines. The group devoted their time to creating some intriguing news stories, with plenty of laughs along the way. They particularly enjoyed interviewing each other in mock ‘press conferences’ and embellishing their stories with weird and wonderful details…

As exam season gets underway, please could all students in Year 11 and 13 who have textbooks and library books on loan from the KSHS library, return them by FRIDAY 28 JUNE  It is essential that textbooks are returned by this deadline so that individual departments may plan and purchase resources to support students in the next academic year.  Students may return books before the deadline if they are no longer required and should refer to their school email account for individual reminders, detailing all that they still have on loan.  Books and textbooks that are not returned by the deadline will incur a replacement charge, which will be added to ParentPay accounts.  Alternatively, a like for like replacement copy is acceptable if the original item is lost or damaged.

  • Books can be returned in person to the KSHS library;
  • Posted in the returns box near the library's main desk;
  • Deposited in the labelled boxes in the KSHS main school foyer.

Carnegie Medal for Writing

Our Carnegie Shadowers Book Club have been meeting once a week to discuss the shortlisted titles being considered for this year’s Carnegie Medal for Writing.  Each year young people from across the UK are invited to participate in the official judging process- shadowing the professional judging panel.  This unique opportunity to participate in this prestigious book award allows young people to review and vote for their favourites; influencing the authors and publishers by providing a young person's insight into the latest literature directly aimed at them.  Choice and access to a range of diverse, good quality books ensures our young readers can safely explore and expand their curiosity about the world around them, benefit from increased lifelong learning outcomes, improved mental health and greater empathy and understanding.  The Carnegie Medal shortlist is a fantastic way to explore new stories, discover new authors and expand individual reader identities.

All the shortlisted titles are available to borrow from the school library and can be found alongside previous shortlisted titles and winners.  The winners of this year's Carnegie Medal and Shadowers Choice Medal will be announced at a live event from London in June.

Maths News

The Junior Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice competition aimed at students across the UK. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

274 pupils in Years 7 and 8 participated in this year's competition and the certificate thresholds were 86+ Gold, 70+ Silver, 57+ Bronze. Well done to everyone who participated; you will all be receiving your certificates shortly. We are incredibly pleased that 57 pupils will receive Bronze Certificates, 31 pupils will receive a Silver Certificate and 13 will receive a Gold certificate. The following pupils will all receive a Gold Certificate and will be invited to participate in the follow up Junior Kangaroo Challenge on Tuesday 11 June: Winnie (7L), Darcy (8FJ), Amelia (8AH) and Olivia (8HB). A special mention goes to Holly (8PA) who will receive a Gold certificate and participate in the prestigious Junior Olympiad on Tuesday 11 June. We wish all our students best of luck with these follow on rounds.

Personal Development

Addressing Vaping through Personal Development
This term, we have tackled the issue of vaping in three opportunities through our directed Personal Development curriculum. The first of these took place in the form of an extended assembly hosted by Daniel Lowbridge, a tobacco control officer from Lincolnshire County Council. Daniel explained to students in Year 7 to Year 10 what e-cigarettes and ‘vapes’ are, how they usually contain addictive nicotine, and how the long-term effects of vaping are yet unknown. The presentation also considered the social media marketing of vapes, particularly the influence of Tik-Tok. Daniel shared information from the organisation ‘ASH’, such as a study that showed how, across 11–17-year-olds, Tik Tok is the most frequently cited source of online promotion for vaping (45%) followed by Instagram (31%).

Following our extended assembly, Year 9 students have seen their PSHE module ‘Healthy Choices’ culminate in a special lesson dedicated to vaping. This session gave pupils another chance to understand the impacts of vaping both on the individual and on the environment – a key lesson when we consider how over 5 million disposable vapes are thrown away every single week.

Finally, our third opportunity to approach vaping head-on this term came when our House Captains worked with Mr Rooke, to create a school ‘anti-vaping poster’ competition. Students across the year groups got creative during their form time Personal Development sessions and created some fantastic, informative posters. The House Captains judged this competition and were extremely impressed with the posters. They decided that their winner was…

Roxy 9W! You can see Roxy’s brilliant winning poster below – I’m sure you will agree it is a very worthy winner.

For parents who wish to learn more about vaping and the risks, laws, or social media context, we can recommend visiting ‘ash.org.uk’.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
