Term 4 - 15 March 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

All of our social media feeds and diaries are increasingly full of national celebration days, all raising awareness of important causes. One we hold especially dear at The High School of course is International Women’s Day. It builds on our daily work of raising the aspirations and empowerment of the young women in our care and reminds them the world really is their oyster.  Assemblies this week cunningly aimed to combine that message with World Book Day celebrations  and Year 7 students presented a great assembly on celebrated female writers both past and present. We were also able to celebrate the impressive independent research done by many of your Year 13 students who were rewarded with some truly excellent grades for their Extended Project Qualifications (EPQ). Read on to see the variety and complexity of their projects.

A big well done to Year 11 who used the mini mock exam week to test themselves on syllabus content not tested in the December mocks. Our aim is to build students’ confidence so that the summer exams feel like just another chance to prove what they know. A core part of this week has been to give students some autonomy to chose which subject and paper they would like to practise in an optional mock. Most use it to test their understanding in subjects they are keen to do well in, as part of their further study plans. It's Year 10’s turn this week - again a chance to build confidence and for teachers to see which elements of the GCSE course require more work in class and where students are already confident.

Finally, it’s Comic Relief and civvies day today. I thought this might make you smile…..A student greeted me this morning: “I like your top Miss.” “Why, thank you,” I replied, reassured that my cool credentials were high with students and that I was remaining ‘on trend’ in their eyes. “Yes, My grandma’s got the same one! It really suits you.”  I am hoping she has a really trendy grandmother! I hope you have better luck in the style stakes this weekend. Thanks for your support as ever.

Year 7 STEM morning

On the morning of Wednesday 28 February, the whole of Year 7 took part in a STEM event run by PPMA BEST (Processing and Packaging Machinery Association, Business, Education, Skills and Training). The year group had the opportunity to find out about careers in STEM with various inspirational speakers, including James Causebrook the managing director of Grunwald who are based locally in Blankney.

They then were given the challenge to use limited resources to create a ‘Roller Loader’ to keep a marble running for as long as possible. This gave them a small taste of the skills needed to be successful in engineering – problem solving, time management, creativity, resources management, and teamwork. The winning team were Millie, Nancy, Amelia, Isabelle, and Charlotte.

The second task was to create an innovative new product in just 20 minutes. They then had to deliver a 40 second ‘elevator pitch’ to the whole year group. The winning team of Emily, Phoebe, Daisy, Sophie and Fiona designed a piece of jewellery which can be worn as a ring but also unravel to become a necklace.

All students should be proud of their efforts this morning, and hopefully have got a small taste of where a career in STEM could take them.

Year 13 Psychology Workshop

On Tuesday 5 March Year 13 Psychology students from the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form joined 400 other local students for a Grade Booster Workshop in Leeds. They were put through their paces by revising the whole two year course in a day! Particular emphasis was placed on core concepts (e.g. research methods, approaches, issues and debates), common areas of misunderstanding (e.g. statistical tests!) and exam technique (e.g. writing effective essays). As you can imagine, this was an invaluable trip and one that was highly appreciated by the students that attended.

Extended Project Qualification EPQ

The Extended Project Qualification is an additional and optional part of Sixth Form Students curriculum. This year all students selected to complete either a dissertation or produce an artefact, and yet again, KSHS students were very successful and achieved excellent results. Those completing a dissertation investigated a range of questions and explored evidence from a wide range of sources to analyse the issues involved. Examples of topics selected by students included:

  • the impact of gentle parenting on future society,
  • the use of monoclonal antibodies in the treatment of cancer,
  • the causes of homo sapiens success in comparison to other hominids,
  • whether the US Supreme Court is fit for purpose in modern society,
  • Turkish language reform during the early years of the Turkish Republic

Those students producing an artefact also have total freedom to choose something that is of interest to them. This year, there were a number of talented artists who chose to complete an art based project, including two students produced animations – one an animation to accompany a sound track and one who produced a graphic novel. Another chose to produce new illustrations for the well-known children’s book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. In addition, we also had students who demonstrated their impressive creativity and skill by writing a short murder mystery story and designing and making a long bow from natural materials.

National Reading Champions Quiz 2024

Good luck to our two teams who will be representing the school at the East Midlands regional heats of the National Reading Champions Quiz this month.  This fantastic reading competition is run by the National Literacy Trust to support and celebrate the reading culture within schools.

The KSHS team selection process took place during two lunchtime sessions in the library, with students answering a series of literary-themed questions.  Well done to everyone who took part in these qualifying rounds. Our eight finalists will be competing against 25 other schools from our region, with the winning team heading to London for the grand final in June.

Maths News

The Maths department would like to take the opportunity to remind parents/carers and pupils of equipment expectations for every lesson, as well as exams. In addition to their exercise book and planner, pupils should have a scientific calculator, compass, rubber, protractor, sharpener, ruler, pencil, blue or black pen, green marking pen and ideally a whiteboard pen. During recent mocks and lessons requiring mathematical equipment, we have found a number of pupils lacking this equipment.

School Attendance

We are rightly proud of our whole school attendance and if you are reading this article, it is likely that you too understand the importance of excellent attendance to school. Consistent attendance plays a pivotal role in shaping a student's academic journey and future success.

Consider for a moment the analogy of a marathon. Just as a runner must commit to showing up for every training session to build endurance and strength, students must attend school regularly to build their knowledge and skills. Each day missed is akin to a skipped training session, potentially setting them back in their educational race.

But why is good attendance so crucial? Here are four good reasons to support us in striving for excellent attendance:-

Academic Achievement

The correlation between good attendance and academic achievement is undeniable. When students are present in class, they can engage with the material, participate in discussions, and ask questions. These interactions deepen their understanding of the subject matter and contribute to their overall academic success. Conversely, frequent absences can lead to gaps in learning, making it difficult for students to keep up with their peers.

Establishing Routine

Consistent attendance helps students develop important life skills, such as time management and responsibility. By adhering to a regular school schedule, they learn the value of punctuality and commitment, traits that are highly prized in the workforce and beyond. Furthermore, attending school regularly establishes a routine that fosters discipline and helps students stay organised, both of which are essential for long-term success.

Building Relationships

School is not just a place for learning; it's also a community where students form connections with their peers and teachers. Regular attendance allows students to forge meaningful relationships with their peers and teachers, creating a supportive network that enhances their educational experience. These relationships can provide valuable emotional and academic support, making it easier for students to navigate challenges and persevere in their studies.

Preparation for the Future

In today's competitive world, employers are increasingly seeking candidates who demonstrate reliability and dedication. By prioritising good attendance in school, students are laying the groundwork for future success in the workforce.

Good attendance is not merely a matter of showing up; it's a foundational element of academic success and personal development. By prioritising attendance, we empower students to fulfil their potential, cultivate essential skills, and lay the groundwork for a bright future.

Below is an infographic to help us understand the impact of low attendance on lost learning.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
