Term 3 - 26 January 2024

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome to what is almost the mid-point of the academic year! For our young people in Year 11 and Year 13 I always think this is the most demanding time of the year for them. Not quite near enough to the external summer exams and all the work that goes into that, but close enough to feel the weight and expectation of the next few months.  Whilst they will only ever be Year 11s or Year 13s once, as staff, we hope they trust in us to guide them through the terrain of the next 3 and a half terms. Thanks to all Year 11 parents/carers who attended the parents' evening. To some we mentioned our ‘Back on Track’ intervention programme. This focused, four-week programme supports students who are further away from the grade they are capable of than we would expect at this stage.  Our aim is always to support students to achieve well enough to help them progress to their next stage, whether that’s in the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form or elsewhere. It’s not about scores and the highest grades for the school spreadsheets (students here generally are quite ambitious enough for themselves) but about making sure students feel as confident as possible and making sure that they are prepared for the next stage of their education. The spreadsheets tend to look after themselves!

Thank you for your continued support.

We are looking forward to sharing an exciting announcement next week…..please keep your eye on our social media channels Kesteven and Sleaford High School (@KSHSSA) / X (twitter.com), Kesteven & Sleaford High School | Sleaford | Facebook and on the latest news section Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Latest News (kshs.uk) of our website.

Mobile Phones

Can we take the opportunity to remind parents/carers that we have strict mobile phone rules in school. Please support us in our aim to protect all our students from the distraction of phone use during the day by making a call to school reception rather than direct messaging your child to communicate about any emergency.

In the past, we have had parents/carers try to intervene in friendship falling outs or text about family circumstances that a teenager is not emotionally equipped to deal with independently during their school day. We even had a parent ringing their children during the school day to announce the death of their grandparent. Please only communicate with your child by mobile phone out of school hours and encourage your child to seek help from an adult in school. We can often help resolve issues quickly and supportively without you having to worry from a distance.

The 5 Best Android Phones of 2024 | Reviews by Wirecutter

When a Year 7-11 student is found using their phone without permission, it is confiscated and returned at the end of the day; a second confiscation leads to our contacting you to let you know that a confiscation has taken place; a third confiscation leads to students having their phone stored in the school safe for a week during the school day, and you may be asked to come and collect the phone from the school.

Our Mobile phone/device policy can be found here. Its aim is to protect students from distraction, online harm and peer unkindness and promote time spent doing things that are collaborative, constructive and face to face instead.

Seasonal Scribe Successes

After the fantastic success of our previous Key Stage 3 (KS3) creative writing competition, we decided to give the Year 7-9 students another challenge. For this competition we invited students to submit poetry OR prose, which encouraged some very inspiring responses! The theme of the new competition, in honour of the presence of a very cold winter, was ‘Seasons’.

KS3 submitted some brilliant entries, and it was a challenge to judge them. Freya (Year 8) and Xiaochu (Year 8) were close and deserve a special mention for their creativity, but our winners are…

Poetry: Sophia B (Year 9)                 Prose: Freya C (Year 8)

You can read Sophia’s nature-inspired poem and a section from Freya’s prose piece below. Congratulations to both writers! We look forward to seeing your submissions to our upcoming whole-school plot-writing challenge, which will honour ‘National Storytelling Week’ and will be introduced during Personal Development session in form time.

'Seasons' by Sophia B

I can never make my mind up.

Which season do I love best?

There are only four to choose from;

each one differs from the rest.

Perhaps the blooming days of Spring.

Crowned with April's raining garland,

the royal perfume of honeycomb and

placid, dew-kissed farmland.

Or Summer eves of gold

heavy with the haze

of sun-drenched, ripened berries

and jovial, well spent days.

Autumn's bountiful harvest?

The air becomes mellow and cool.

Winding lanes carpeted in woven quilts

of dazzling, ruby jewels.

Maybe a chirp from robin red-breast,

or delicate, bashful frost.

Threading every silken cobweb

with Winter's pearly drops.

No, I still cannot decide,

best to wait another year.

Though I will always be certain that

every season brings new cheer.

Freya and Sophia - Scribe competition winners

‘Traveling Through the Seasons’ by Freya C (extract)

As the rays of light rose from behind vast mountains, the colours of forest start to shimmer under the early sunlight. The fresh dewdrops upon boughs of the spruce trees glistened all the colours of the rainbow, making it look like it was wrapped around with twinkling fairy lights. In a nearby lake, swans emerged from the reeds and gracefully swam with their newborn fledglings.
Standing at the edge of the bank, a young boy with watchful eyes looked upon the newborn fledglings as they swam across the tranquil lake. Small, grey feathers dotted the lake whilst the fledglings paddled to keep up with their mother. The boy was dirty with the fresh, wet mud all over his legs, but he did not mind. He soon left the lake with his bucket in hand.
Eventually he reached a shack where he kept his belongings. On a bedside table was a notebook with scribbled notes on one page but on the other page was one word; ‘snowdrop.’

Are you a Duke of Edinburgh participant or just want to volunteer?

PMI Germany Chapter e.V. - There are many good reasons to volunteer with the PMI Germany Chapter

Anyone interested in giving their time, and in particular Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) participants, might find the new volunteer website useful. It gives you access to a wide range of opportunities in Lincolnshire.

On Wednesday 10 January, a group of KSHS sixth form students including myself helped volunteer coordinators Steph Boyfield and Abbi Taylor to test the new website. We found there was a plethora of categories available, such as ‘Art & Craft’, ‘Environment’ or ‘History’, helping you find the perfect role.

From experience, I know that it is challenging to find volunteer roles at all levels of DofE, but especially at Bronze or Silver when participants are under 16 years old. However, this website allows you to search for opportunities under 18’s. At the time of writing, there were 51 opportunities for people under 18s which ranged from ‘marking and communication’ to ‘health and care’. As well as 25 opportunities for under 16s.

I found many of the opportunities available for participants over 14 years old were in retail. Through my DofE Gold volunteering at a British Heart Foundation charity shop, I would highly recommend a retail role to build confidence and communication.

You can also search for DofE approved providers.

Please have a look at their fantastic website: https://lincolnshirevolunteers.teamkinetic.co.uk

Or contact Steph Boyfield: steph@voluntarycentreservices.org.uk for more information.

Service children support

Did you know that KSHS runs a Drop-In session every Wednesday break 2 week 2 for those students whose parents are serving or ex-serving members of the Armed Forces? The aim of the Drop In session is for Service children to have a space where they can share their thoughts and feelings, talk with students experiencing similar situations and in the long term promote a variety of other Armed Forces related events. The Drop In session is run by Mrs Brown and Mrs Banks, both of whom are part of military families; additionally, Mrs Brown is an RAF veteran, having spent 8 years as a commissioned Air Traffic Control Officer.

We are aware that we have a significant number of Service children, and in addition to the Forces Drop In we would be more than happy to assist in supporting students whose parents are on deployment. It is during these times that anxiety peaks and a heavy emotional toll can be placed upon Service children. Prolonged periods of separation from a parent is an upsetting experience in itself, but add to that the knowledge that a parent may be in harm’s way while on deployment, and the emotional strain on Service children during such times can be severe.

If you or a family member are on deployment or due to be so anytime this academic year, we would love to help ensure we can support your child as best as we can in school. This could be through the Drop In sessions, a quick form time catch up or arranging a time in school where your child can contact the loved one on deployment.

If you would like your child to receive such support in school, please contact either Mrs K Brown or Mrs E Banks through enquiries@kshs.uk

Student Success - Kuk Sool Won

Well done to Grace, Eleanor, Megan and Eva who took part in the Carre’s Outreach programme event run on Friday 19 January at the Little Leisure Centre in Nocton. The event featured a martial arts seminar conducted by their club, Kuk Sool Won of Sleaford.

KUK SOOL WON - World Kuk Sool Association, Inc. Trademark Registration

They each supported and then led a slot during two seminars – attended by over 150 children from across Lincolnshire. This ranged from kicking, forms, techniques, acrobatics and weapons. During this time, they demonstrated great leadership, good communication and organisational skills to lead 5 groups of 8-12 younger children through each seminar. After that, they each took part in a 25-minute demonstration where they performed with weapons, sparred each other, demonstrated techniques on adult members and broke wood with their feet.

Growth Mindset

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
