Dear Parent/Carer

At the end of week three of term 1, I hope that your child has settled into the new year well. We have been impressed by students work ethic and already they are producing some impressive work, contributing to the life of the school in creative and committed ways and enjoying the new rewards system.

A reminder to parents of the rules around subtle make-up seems timely, particularly for students in Years 9-11. We are really appreciative of your support of the subtle make-up rules we have in school. There are always trends and we probably all remember pushing the boundaries ourselves when we were younger. The vogue currently is for heavy lashes with some students appearing with salon-applied lashes which don’t conform to our subtle make-up expectations. Please save these treatments for a treat in the holidays only and help us apply the rules fairly and consistently in school. Fairness is something the students themselves value highly and rather than tutors spending time in conversations with young people about uniform it would be lovely to free up time for constructive conversations about more constructive topics.

And finally, on a positive note, we undertook our first fire drill of the year this week. A visitor to the school was on site and shared just how impressive our students’ attitudes and behaviour were during that drill. They were effusive in their praise, something that always makes the staff feel very proud.

Year 7 and Year 10 Settling in evening

Today all Year 7 and 10 parents should receive a separate letter inviting them to our face to face settling in evening on Tuesday 10 October 2023 from 4pm until 7pm.

Whilst academic subject parents’ evenings will take place throughout the year online (a decision made in consultation with parents via a survey last year) we appreciate that parents value the chance for a face to face visit in school especially at key points of transition.

This evening is an opportunity for parents to visit the school, have a face to face appointment with their child’s form tutor, and attend a range of presentations to find out more about the expectations and support available for students including:

  • How your child is assessed and what support is available if we think they need more support
  • Our systems and processes in school to support all students’ mental health and well-being both proactively and if they need additional help.
  • Have a 5 minute scheduled face to face appointment with your child’s form tutor in your child’s form room.
  • Refreshments will be available in the dining room so do stop and meet with other parents if you would like to - students will be raising money for their Outlook expedition to Costa Rica this summer.
  • We hope the pre-loved uniform stall will also be available in case you’d like to pick up any extra uniform. Everything from clothing items to spare trainers are available at reasonable costs.

More details and access to the appointment booking system can be found in the letter. We look forward to seeing parents on the evening.

MFL News

European Day of Languages

Tuesday 26 September is European Day of Languages and the great MFL Year 7 European Bake Off is back! We would love Year 7s to bake a European themed cake or cupcakes and bring them in on the day. After judging and finding a winner, all cakes will be sold at lunchtime in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support as it is their coffee morning that week too.

Just a few requests…

  • Please do not use nuts in your baking as we have students with allergies (in fact, a list of ingredients with your cakes would be very helpful if possible)
  • Please bring your cake to the food room in the morning
  • Please make sure your name and form are clear on your cake / container. We can’t award prizes if we don’t know who made it!
  • You must collect your container at the end of the day – if there is any cake left over, you can take it home.

Thank you for your support.

Look out for lots more languages-related activities on the day!

How to help your child

Parents often ask us how to support their child when learning a language, particularly when they can’t speak it themselves. A really simple way is to encourage them to use www.languagenut.com . We subscribe to this excellent website and each pupil has their own individual login. On there, they can practise vocabulary, grammar, phonics as well as the four different skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. They have homework assignments on the website most weeks but can spend as much time as they want on there. If access to the internet is difficult at home, they can use the computers in the library at school. There is even AI chat on there now which can help pupils to improve sentences.

MFL Clubs

We have several clubs available in the languages department, both for fun and to help improve your languages. Try out the Duolingo Club and learn any language or the Languages Club which will have all sorts of language and cultural activities. These are run by our fantastic Y13 linguists.

For KS4 there are Tuesday lunchtime clubs for both French (Mrs Ellison) and German (Mrs Samworth) where the aim is to increase confidence and improve grammar and vocabulary in preparation for GCSE exams.

Freshers' Fayre

We are proud to offer a wide and varied selection of extracurricular clubs and our annual Freshers Fayre provided the opportunity for all our students to browse the Clubs’ stalls and sign up.

Extracurricular activities play a vital role in shaping young people and can greatly enhance their overall school experiences; by learning new skills, boosting confidence, widening social interactions, and providing the chance to represent their school.  With the help of student volunteers and subject prefects, our Freshers Fayre marked the official launch of clubs for terms 1&2.

There will be a mini re-launch of clubs at the beginning of terms 3 and 5, giving further opportunities for students to sign up and try something different.

Please see all clubs and activites for the Autumn terms below.

Library borrowing

This year we are continuing with a system successfully trialed last year, to help with the retrieval of resources borrowed from the library.  Our students are very good at returning their library books and textbooks on time, but inevitably, some books do get forgotten and this directly impacts on our collections.  The school library does not operate a fine system for overdue items as this can act as a barrier to successful and confident borrowing within an educational setting.  However, for books that are lost, damaged beyond repair or long overdue (6 weeks or more without reasonable explanation) a replacement charge will be added to Parentpay accounts. If the item is subsequently returned, the charge will be removed.   Alternatively, if the item remains unreturned, parents may wish to replace it with a like for like copy rather than pay the replacement charge.  Prior to a charge being added to Parentpay, students will receive both email and verbal reminders of the items overdue, and I encourage any student to visit the library in person if they are unsure about any aspects of their library borrowing.

Interact Club

If your child wants to do something positive for the community, Interact would love them to join us! We are linked to Sleaford Rotary Club and we have a very busy term between now and Christmas. This will include a food collection for the Sleaford Food Larder, The Shoebox Appeal (we aim to fill shoeboxes with little gifts for those who otherwise might have very little at Christmas) and our famous Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party in collaboration with the Food and Music Clubs. We are always delighted to welcome new and old members, especially those with lots of ideas and enthusiasm!

We meet during break time on Wednesday (week 1) in L2.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough they will persevere.
