Dear Parent/Carer

It always feels like the year is in full swing when the first residential trip goes out. As I write, our Year 11 German linguists and historians are on a flight to Berlin. I was lucky enough to be a member of staff on the trip a few years ago. As a forces child I did two tours at RAF Gatow and so I had a lived experience of the Berlin Wall and visits to the Checkpoint Charlie museum. To visit after the Wall had come down was a personally moving experience, but what was so memorable for me was that it was such a moving experience for our 15 and 16-year-old students too. I hope they enjoy and learn as much as I did, as well as enjoying all the fun of a residential with their friends. The next residential trip in the planning is a Christmas market trip to Lille in France for our French linguists in early December. My heartfelt thanks to all our staff who are prepared to give up their own family time in the midst of a busy term to give our students these experiences.

Next week in school we look forward to seeing Year 7 and Year 10 parents for our face to face 'settling in' evening, and the week after, our Year 11 parents/carers and their children at the Sleaford Joint Sixth Form information evening. Please do come and say hello, pass on any feedback and ask any questions you may have.

You will have received more details of both if you have children in these year groups. Other dates for your diaries are flagged later in the newsletter and are on our website calendar too.

Geography News

In order for the GCSE geography students to consolidate their knowledge of coastal landforms and collect primary data for fieldwork, the Geography department organised Year 11 fieldtrips to North Norfolk on Thursday 21 and Monday 25 September. Our first stop offered a boat trip with ‘Bean’s Boats’ from Morston Quay out to Blakeney point- a spit, which is a depositional landform. Spits are formed due to the transportation process of longshore drift which behind them create salt marshes and mud flats. This boat trip was especially interesting because we were only able to visit the spit at high tide; if we had come 6 hours later when the tide was out there would be no water but just mud and silt! A favourite highlight had to be the seal colony which we saw bathing in the sunshine right on the tip of Blakeney point. After our experience out on the water and a lunch break, we made our second stop at Hunstanton where we observed the sea defences which included the sea wall and groynes. We gathered our data by practising systematic sampling. This involved us taking a handful of pebbles from the north side of each groyne to measure the levels of attrition (the repeated action of rocks hitting each other and eventually wearing them down making them rounder and smoother along the beach). We also measured the height and length of each section of the groynes. This was to see if the groynes had trapped sand to help build up the beach for tourism and for beach protection. We observed the iconic striped cliffs made of carstone, red chalk and white chalk. We also learnt about the wave-cut platform which is a landform of erosion found at the bottom of the cliff which further developed our knowledge of coastal processes in action.

Overall, it was a most interesting trip and one that definitely helped to support and develop our knowledge of coastal landforms, processes and defences.

School Councillors visit NKDC offices

Evie, Alice, Olivia and Ayo had a fantastic day last Thursday  representing the school at the NKDC student council. They discussed communities, equality and diversity, and were given a range of information relating to self-regulation to bring back and share in school.

European Day of Languages Assembly: Fictional languages - Danes Education Trust Blog Danes Education Trust Blog

On Tuesday 26 September (and all week really!) we celebrated European Day of Languages. Staff and pupils took part in a variety of activities including the following:

  • Mr Shivas led a series of assemblies for all year groups about his experiences of languages and all the things they have enabled him to do in life.
  • Throughout the week, staff wore badges with greetings in a variety of languages and pupils competed to find as many as they could. Many students found all or almost all of the greetings, including an impressive number of entries from 7A! The final winners were Lily Rose 11F, Marith 11LR and Edie 7A.
  • Pupils experienced languages in some of their other lessons too, such as using German numbers in Maths lessons.
  • All of Year 10 took part in a postcard competition where their task was to design a postcard to promote languages on one side and to show off their knowledge of languages on the other side. Judged on both artwork and language, our top 5 (in no particular order) were: Grace 10A, Ola 10W, Courtney 10A, Lizzie 10W, Amelie 10F. Well done!
  • We once again held the Year 7 Great European Bake Off – some of the fantastic entries are pictured here. Thank you to Year 7 for your huge efforts. The delicious cakes were sold off by 6th Form linguists in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care and raised £135. Deciding on a winner was really tough – we looked at the quality of the cake, as well as the design and how well they fitted in with the European theme. We finally decided on the top 3. In first place was the ‘Europe’ cake by Hannah and Amy in 7W, followed by Sophie in 7W with her ‘Norway’ cake in 2nd place. In third place was Daisy in 7W with her ‘Guten Tag!’ cake with three layers of sponge in the colours of the German flag. Mentions for other brilliant cakes should go to Kamile, Issie, Isla, Scarlet and Ellie in 7W, Chloe in 7F, Winnie in 7L and Felicity, Eleanor and Edie in 7A. Well done!

Interact Club – Rotary Shoe Box Appeal

As usual, the Interact Club will be organising the Shoe Box Appeal over the next few weeks. We are hoping to provide lots of small gifts for those who might otherwise have very little. We would be very grateful if forms could work together to provide at least one shoe box of gifts per form. Students could bring in items or forms could have a collection and then go shopping to buy the gifts all at once. Shoe boxes must be the ones provided by the Rotary Club and it is really important that they have the £2 attached for the price of the box and postage.

Information about contents is below and our deadline is Monday 6 November. Thank you very much in advance for your efforts – can any form beat 8AH’s massive total of 13 boxes last year?

She has worked incredibly hard to lead a team of parents/carers and staff, raising thousands of pounds for the school. During her time as Chair, the PTA have supported countless school events, opened the very popular pre-loved uniform shop, and contributed towards numerous items for both the school and students. As a school we would like to publicly thank Mrs Fleming for her years of service and support for KSHS.

Coming up:

  • Pop-up pre-loved uniform shop will be available at the Year 7 and 10 settling in evening from 4-7pm on Tuesday 10 October.
  • Lincs fashion show evening - open to all on 30 November - more details below!

Our next PTA meeting will be on Monday 20 November - this will be a hybrid meeting, and if you are unable to join us in person, you will be able to join via TEAMS.

If you are interested in joining the PTA - please email Katy.ferns@kshs.uk for more information.

Student Success - Lucy Ireland – Regional Show Jumping

Having successfully qualified for the Eastern Regional Pony Club Show Jumping Championships Lucy and a team of 3 others representing the Belvoir Pony Club went to Great Witchingham last weekend.

3 clear rounds from Lucy and her pony Pickle helped the team gain an impressive 3rd place out of over 20 teams.

Well done, Lucy!
