Term  5 - 12 May 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

After the excitement of the Coronation celebrations last week this week has been all about getting Year 11 and Year 13 ready for forthcoming exams. If you are a parent or carer of either year group, you should also have received a letter with plenty of information in. Please do have a read.

For Year 9 we hope that today's careers day gave them some insights into future career opportunities. Huge thanks to all those parents/carers and to our guest speaker who gave up their professional time to talk to groups about their profession, how they came to it and their career so far. Do read on for further information.

Lastly, we were so sorry to have to make the decision to postpone the Bronze DofE expedition this weekend. Taking so many students away is a huge planning exercise and the decision was not taken lightly at all. Thanks to those parents/carers who called us with offers of support. Mrs Walker did everything she could to make sure it ran, but we simply couldn't cover her and 4 other assessors at short notice, and meet the conditions of our risk assessment. We will be in touch soon regarding rescheduling.

Have a sunny weekend.

Mrs J Smith
Head of School

Coronation Wildflower Meadow Planting

{alt_tag}

Students in Gardening Club, and Year 7 prefects, have begun raising a wildflower meadow in the school grounds to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

Earlier in the spring the students planted some wildflower seeds, and on Tuesday lunchtime planted the seedlings in a designated area in the corner of the Head’s Garden. A commemorative plaque will also be placed on the site. Gardening club will continue to add to and maintain the site over the weeks and months, until the wildflowers are established. We look forward to seeing how the meadow grows and develops over the years to come!

Art News

What talented Art teachers we have at KSHS...........

Our Subject Leader for Art Mr P Letchworth has an exhibition of paintings at Gallery St Martins in Lincoln. It is located at the bottom of the Michaelgate cobbles.

The exhibition coincides with the Cycling race the Lincoln Grand Prix, which is a pro series with Men and Women races, comprising of 13 loops which include the Michaelgate cobbled climb 13 times! You have a chance to catch the exhibition this weekend.

In October last year, the Usher Gallery in Lincoln held its first post-Covid Open exhibition.

The idea of the competition was to act as a stimulus for the celebration of Artistic creativity during lockdown; the title of the exhibition was ‘Art out of Isolation’ and it ran from September to early January this year.

The winning painting called ‘Treating’ can be seen below and was painted by Mrs T Milnes, KSHS Teacher of Art.

Library and Literacy News

Coronation celebrations

The Coronation was celebrated in the library with a book themed picnic display.  With plenty of bunting and an opportunity to highlight our British Values, two of our Library Captains are pictured here adding the final touches to the display.

Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing 2023

Thousands of young people from across the country are taking part in the annual and prestigious Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing.  Shadowing the official judging process and ultimately voting for their favourites to win, our own Shadowing Reading Group is meeting once a week to discuss and review from the shortlisted titles and will vote for their winner in June.

After School Book Club

Students who are keen readers, or for those who are looking to become more confident in their reading for pleasure, are welcome to join the Book Club on Wednesday 3.30pm-4.15pm in the library.  We are a friendly and informal group who meet to discuss all things bookish, from how to choose a good book, reading extracts together and exploring different genres.

This group is particularly suited to students in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Textbook reminder for Year 11 and Year 13 students

As we approach the exam season - individual reminders are being sent out to students in Year 11 and Year 13 who have textbooks on loan from the KSHS library.  It is essential that textbooks are returned by the deadline so that individual departments may plan and purchase resources to support students in the next academic year.

The deadline for returning textbooks is Friday 30 June

  • Students may return their books prior to the deadline if they are no longer required.
  • Replacement charges will be requested and added to ParentPay accounts in the event that books are not returned.
  • Students who have borrowed resources from Carre’s and St Georges will need to return them to the school they were originally borrowed from.

Scribes KS3 Writing Competition – the results!

Scribes – a KS4 creative writing club with a mission to enter national writing competitions – recently hosted a KS3 competition. The challenge was to write a piece of prose or poetry that started and finished with the line ‘it would never be the same again.’

We are very pleased to announce that after an extensive (and sometimes contentious!) judging process, the results are…

First place - Marty 7PA

Second place - Xiaochu 7HB

Third place - Anya 7PA

Well done to everyone who entered the competition. We loved reading your submissions! Please look out for our next competition for another opportunity to take on a creative writing challenge.

Marty’s winning submission –

It would never be the same again.

The house, the walls,

The floors, the halls,

The steps I took,

These wretched books,

The things I’ve seen,

Those horrible dreams,

The cursed second floor,

In my house on the moor.

The people lost…

The lines crossed...

It would never be the same again.

Judging comments – ‘We loved how Marty’s poem created dark tension and encouraged the reader’s curiosity. The pace was very effective. Great poem, Marty!’

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough they will persevere.
