Term 4  -  3 March 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

If you are in any doubt of how enriching it is to be a student, or a member of staff, at Kesteven and Sleaford High School you only needed to be in school this week.

‘High School Musical’ our big production of the year has been a sell out and with the second performance on Friday night we’d like to say thank you for all the support from parents/carers and friends of the school.

If acting isn’t your child’s passion then perhaps the STEM workshop piqued their interest in Year 7 or Year 8, or they were super proud to collect their EPQ A Level result in Year 13.

All this and we managed to squeeze in World Book Day activities too!

Year 7 and 8 Disco

This year we have seen unprecedented demand for tickets for the discos run for Year 7 and 8 students at Carre’s and the High School. For the disco on Friday 17 March we gave parents/carers advanced notice of the tickets going on sale. Please do understand that discos are organised by our senior students as charitable fundraisers and are overseen by staff and volunteers who are DBS checked and give up their Friday evenings to support the students’ fundraising. These events and the number of tickets available are restricted by both fire and safety regulations in our school hall, and by number of supervisors. We are working hard to see if we can release a further small number of tickets for this event and will make parents/carers aware of when these tickets will be available to buy with advanced notice. Such events are always under review. Thank you for your understanding.

Head of School

Year 13 Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) students

Fourteen hardworking Year 13 students celebrated an early A Level result this week when they received the results of their EPQ A Level entries. This qualification is worth UCAS points and often used by universities to make adjusted offers for places on courses. The course requires students to autonomously plan, research, and evaluate a project of their choosing and provides the opportunity for students to explore an interest outside their main fields of study or complementary to them. Example projects this year included:

  • Is stem cell therapy a tenable cure for Type 1 diabetes Mellitus?
  • To what extent is social media the most influential marketing strategy?
  • Why do over 50% of girls in the UK stop sport by the age of 17 and what is the most effective strategy that has been put in place to change this?
  • Diversity in the theatre industry: are we there yet?

STEM event in school

Year 7 STEM Morning

On the morning of Thursday 2 March, the whole of Year 7 took part in a STEM event run by PPMA. The year group had the opportunity to find out about careers in STEM with various inspirational speakers, including James Causebrook the managing director of Grunwald who are based locally in Blankney.

They then were given the challenge to use limited resources to create a ‘Roller Loader’ to keep a marble running for as long as possible. This gave them a small taste of the skills needed to be successful in engineering – problem-solving, time management, creativity, resources management, and teamwork. The winning team were Grace, Robin, Chloe, Ava, and Wiktoria.

The second task was to create an innovative new product in just 20 minutes. They then had to deliver a 40 second ‘elevator pitch’ to the whole year group. The winning team of Poppy, Elsie, Issy, Emelia, and Kiki designed a ‘smellyvision’ - a TV which released a scent to match the footage being shown on the TV, including refillable cartridges of the different scents available.

Leia said “I found out that engineering is more than just building and fixing – it’s about designing, being creative, and using Robots! My favourite part was the marble run, because I like getting hands on and I liked testing it and adapting it to find the best way to make it work.”. Lily-May said “I found this morning fascinating and I’d love to become an engineer when I’m older.”

All students should be proud of their efforts this morning, and hopefully have got a small taste of where a career in STEM could take them.

Year 10 Artwork on Display

Students from Year 10 have seen their artwork on display at the ‘Boston’s Global River’ exhibition in Boston.

The KSHS flag, created in March 2022, was paraded in the River of Hope section of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant in central London, and also exhibited at the Royal Maritime Museum in Greenwich last autumn. It is now on display at Fydell House, Boston, alongside five other flags created by Boston schools, and banners from Year 1 of the Rivers of The World project.

Some students and their parents were able to attend the exhibition preview and celebration evening on Friday 24 February, to see the exhibition, meet other schools involved in the project, and enjoy some canapes!

The exhibition runs until Saturday 29 April.

UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge Results

The Maths department were delighted with the results of the recent Intermediate Maths Challenge and would like to say a massive well done to the pupils who took part. All entrants receive either a certificate of participation: bronze, silver or gold dependent on result. This year we had 8 pupils attain gold, 18 silver and 30 bronze. Pupils can look back at their results by logging on to their UKMT profile. A huge well done to Abi H who achieved Gold Best in Year 11, as well as the following pupils from Year 9 and Year 10 who are going through to the Grey Kangaroo follow-on round on 16 March:

Year 9:

Ash P - Gold (Best in School)

Abi Watt - Gold

Emma A - Gold

Year 10:

Lilly B - Gold (Best in Year)

Zoha B - Gold

Jessica M - Gold

Anna A - Gold

Participation in the Kangaroo follow-up rounds act as entry points to the selection and training programmes for international competitions held in Oxford, Cambridge, Australia and Hungary. We wish all the pupils the best of luck in these follow-up rounds.

Can you solve the puzzle below?

Write your name and form on your solution to hand in to the maths department by Friday 10 March. Each entry is a merit, with a weekly prize for drawn for correct solutions.

In the five numbers below you need to put in four operations

but you can only use addition (+) and multiplication (x)

and must keep the numbers in this order.

How many different answers can you find?     Remember BIDMAS.

Library and Literacy News

Once more the library has been at the centre of our World Book Day celebrations this year. Students enjoyed taking part in the various book themed activities throughout the day, including a book lucky dip, spot the author and the highly competitive guess how many books there are in the library.

Staff throughout the school have joined in the fun by sharing their ‘Shelfies’ with students- reinforcing how much we love books and reading at KSHS.

Parents and carers of our Year7-11 students have been sent an electronic link to the £1 World Book Day Token, which can be redeemed at all participating bookstores nationwide, including the Scholastic Book Fair which will be visiting our school next week.

Mrs Samworth, Mrs Brooks, Miss Chant and Mrs Gibson are just some of the staff who have shared their Shelfies

Spotlight on Sport

The Football season is well underway at Kesteven and Sleaford High School and has seen over 50 students play competitive national football. As a school we enter the English School National competition (U13s, U14s, U15s and U16s) which can take us all over the country, we are excited for our upcoming games against schools in Mansfield and Chesterfield. Our county Football matches have taken us to Spalding and Louth but unfortunately, we didn’t succeed; we wish both schools luck in the next round. The Utilita cup was a highlight of the season when the squads got to play on the pitch outside the LNER stadium against many other schools within the county. I would like to say a big thank you to our Captains/club helpers Marith, Lily, and Missy.

New KSHS Equestrian Team Manager

We are in the process of completing the appointment of a new equestrian team manager. When all of the paperwork has been completed, we will be able to let you know the new contact details and we welcome any new equestrian enthusiasts to get in touch and represent the school.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough they will persevere.
