Term 3  -  10 February 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

I wanted to take the opportunity as we reach the mid-point of this academic year to thank parents and carers for their support and commitment to the school. From our new parent governors, to our PTA members, to the great numbers of you who have offered your time recently to contribute to our careers events, we are really grateful for your support. Many of you are offering great parent taxi services as our students rehearse after school and at weekends for the forthcoming ‘High School Musical’ production. With over 100 students involved it is sure to be our most ambitious performance yet, after the fantastic success of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ last year. See below for more details.

If you are a parent/carer of a child with additional needs you will have received an email with a short survey link to seek your views on SEND provision for your child at this setting. The survey closes on Wednesday 22 February at 9am and we would love to receive as many responses as possible.  If your child has additional needs and you’d like a link to the survey sending again please make a request via enquiries@kshs.uk.

Finally, we have had a couple of complaints from local residents about parents dropping off their children in the mornings and blocking domestic driveways which I said I would pass on. Please be mindful of the inconvenience this causes.

Do have a super half term break.

Mrs J Smith
Head of School

A tribute to Emma Pattison (née Kirk)

 KSHS student 1988-1994

It was with great sadness that we learnt on Monday of the tragic death of Emma Pattison (née Kirk). Emma was a student at the High School from 1988-1994 and is remembered as a friendly warm and smiley student. Her classmates remember her love of music and her talent for singing. Emma went on to give back to the world of education becoming Head Teacher of Epsom College last September after six years as Headteacher of Croydon High School in south London.  We send our warmest condolences to Emma’s parents and sister as well as her wider family, friends, colleagues and students.

Careers Event

Calling all parents and friends of the school

Could you support our Careers Event in May?

Part of our role in school is to provide our students with high quality careers education, advice and guidance.  As we look to do this, we are seeking to broaden our understanding of what fantastic skill sets and experiences you as parents/carers have and to look for ways in which we can enlist your help to make a truly excellent offer for your children.

If you would be interested in using your own personal employment experience to have a positive impact on our careers education within school we would like to invite you to complete a very short survey online that would enable us to connect with you.  The survey can be accessed here:  https://forms.office.com/e/aEpGCcCMAg

A date to note is Friday 12 May when the Year 9 students will be having a day off-timetable to explore the varied and interesting job and educational possibilities that await them.  We are particularly keen to hear from you if you would be interested in supporting this day (e.g. by visiting school and sharing with our students about your job/profession).

Library and Literacy News

Introducing Reading Cloud

Access our brilliant library with your child from home.

We have a fantastic, updated library resource called Reading Cloud which has been recently introduced to our students. The Reading Cloud is a fantastic way to connect remotely to the school library and enhance reading and literacy experiences from beyond the physical library space.  Of course, nothing beats an actual visit to the library, but it is not always possible to find enough time in the school day to fit in a visit. With the Reading Cloud, students can access the library from home and in much the same way that we would choose what to watch next on a streaming service, students can scroll and browse the complete library catalogue and take time to plan their next read.

There are two ways students can access the Reading Cloud

  1. The web-based version - which can be accessed here or from the school website in the student section under the Learning Resource Centre tab
  2. By downloading the Reading Cloud App from your usual App provider

The Reading Cloud gives access to the following:

  • The ability to browse the whole library catalogue remotely and click on any book to discover more details
  • Click and collect – Reserve a library book and await notification that the item is ready to collect from the library
  • Glance at current loans and return dates - useful for avoiding overdue books
  • View the latest new books to arrive in the library
  • Catch up on our school library news, upcoming events, quizzes, and clubs
  • Click on Who Next for a personalised list of book recommendations based on your previous library loans
  • Explore reading lists
  • Access links to useful websites that support reading for pleasure
  • Create your own book review.  Reviews and recommendations are a fantastic way to help people in our reading community choose what to read next
  • Discover featured authors, books of the week, words of the week and more

The Reading Cloud is a safe and secure space to access library and reading information.  It is specifically designed to only connect to our school library.  All students based at KSHS have received an email with their individual Reading Cloud log in details but if any student requires further assistance they can call in to the library and speak to Mrs Gibson.

National Reading Champions Quiz 2023

Starting after half-term we will be holding a series of literary qualifying quizzes to determine teams to represent the school at the regional heats for the National Reading Champions Quiz 2023.  We have participated in this fantastic event for the past few years, and it is hugely popular with our students.

  • If you are 14 or under?
  • Love reading and quizzing?
  • Want to represent your school?
  • Then the National Reading Campions Quiz is for you

Further details will be sent out to students ahead of the first round of team selection - which will take place in the library at lunchtime on Wednesday 22 February 2023

Remote access to the Learning Resource Centre

Keep a look-out for the new Learning Resource Centre tab in the student section of the school’s website. From here students will be able to access Reading Cloud, our Ebook resource (Wheelers) and Lexia.

Duke of Edinburgh

On Saturday 28 January 74 Year 9 students attended the DofE training day. We had a great day and they covered 10 assignments: introduction to DofE, campsites and tents, rucksacks, packing and kit, emergencies, food, stoves and fuel, map reading, route planning, and first aid.

The next event for the Bronze award is the practice expedition 25-26 March shortly followed by the Silver practice expedition 22-24 April.

There is also a drop in after school session until 5.30pm on Wednesday 1 March and Wednesday 15 March for any groups to come for assistance with preparation for their expeditions.

PTA News

We are busy planning several future events for which your support would be greatly appreciated.

We are supporting the Drama production of The High School Musical on the Thursday 2 and Friday 3 March by providing refreshments and a raffle for both nights of the performance. Any donations of gifts and Easter eggs brought to school after half-term or on the day of the event would be much appreciated.

We would also like to hold a sports-themed raffle in the Summer term; we have been kindly donated a 1990 England football shirt signed by Paul Gascoigne and we would like to make this the main prize, but we are looking for other sporting events, memorabilia, equipment or experiences to be donated. We hope to presell the tickets at £10.00. If you have something you could donate, please let us know. We are also looking into running a virtual ‘Duck Race’ again in the Summer term.

The PTA continue to support school projects and we are in the process of purchasing waterproof picnic blankets for students to sit on outside when the weather improves. We have recently donated money to the school gardening club, the Drama department and are raising funds for Music department instruments. We would like to do more but need help from parents/carers and staff in order to do so. We desperately need new members to join our committee, it only involves one meeting each term and helping with school events when needed.

Please consider joining us and help to make the school a better place for all our students.

Are you a 100 Club winner?

The lucky numbers are:

February

All winners will be receiving a cheque for £25.00

Thank you for your support.

Student Success - British Fencing

On Sunday the 29 January, Sophie 10LR participated in the British Youth Fencing Championships in Nottingham. She competed in the under 16 qualifiers, in 2 different weapons discipline – Epee and Foil. In the morning she competed in the Epee competition securing her a place in the final where came joint 3rd. In the afternoon she competed in the foil competition, again securing her a place in the final where she finished 2nd. Her achievements in this qualifier competitions have earned her a place in the championships to be held around easter time in Sheffield at the English Institute of Sport.

Student Success - KSHS Equestrian Team

On 29 January, Issy 10LM, Lydia 10LR and Lucy 11W, members of the KSHS Equestrian Team, competed in the NSEA Eventer’s Challenge at Epworth Equestrian near Doncaster. Over nineteen schools from as far as Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire took part in the challenge, which consisted of a course 8 show jumps and 12 Cross Country fences. The Cross-Country course, in particular, was very technical and challenging, causing a number of riders to come unstuck.

Issy and Lydia entered the 80cm class as individuals. Both girls jumped a double clear round, finishing in 17th and 19th place respectively, out of a large and hugely competitive field of 35 riders. In the 90cm class, KSHS entered a team comprising Lydia, Issy and Lucy. Again the competition was hotly fought and the team finished in a very commendable 6th place. Lucy entered the 100cm class as an individual and came 7th out of 12 riders, picking up just 4 faults with an unlucky pole in the show jumping.

KSHS Equestrian Team welcomes new members and is very friendly and supportive. If you are interested in joining and representing the school in competitions in all disciplines or, just want to take part in training events with your fellow equestrians, then please contact the school at enquiries@kshs.uk

Safer Internet Day (7 Feb 2023)

Did you know that according to new research from Safer Internet Day that 50% of children aged 3-17 years old used TikTok in 2022 and that 59% of children aged between 8-17 said they had seen something ‘worrying or nasty’ online. We would like to support our young people in becoming digitally responsible and with your help we can work towards a safer online world for our students.

This newsletter will focus on TIKTOK, the rise in use of TIKTOK in our teen population has been significant.

Do you know enough about TikTok as a parent/carer?

What is TikTok?

TikTok is a free social media platform that lets you create, share, and watch short clips. The app is popular for viral dances and celebrity cameos and is a creative and fun platform for teens to enjoy.

Currently, the app is available in 75 languages with over 1 billion active users (Jan 2021). Like the app Musical.ly before it, it is most popular with under-16s. A 2022 Ofcom report found that TikTok is the most popular social media platform for posting content. Thirteen is the minimum age according to TikTok’s terms and conditions. This means that all Year 7 and many Year 8 students should not have a TikTok account.

What do parents say about the app?

Parents have expressed concerns about the inappropriate language of some of the videos posted which may make this less suitable for younger children. There has been a rise in contact from strangers; predators seeking to connect with children is another privacy and security risk on TikTok. Please do make sure you have set up privacy and security settings to limit this contact.

What should parents be concerned about?

When you download the app, users can see all the content without creating an account although they are not able to post, like or share anything until they’ve set up an account on the app.

By default, all accounts are public so anyone on the app can see what your child shares. However, only approved followers can send them messages.

Users can like or react to a video, follow an account, or send messages to each other, so there is the risk that strangers will be able to directly contact children on the app.

Children may be tempted to take risks to get more of a following or likes on a video so it’s important to talk about what they share and with who.

Need to delete your account? Go to Me>Tap …, located on the top right corner >Tap Manage account > Delete account. Follow the instructions in the app to delete your account.
