Term 3  -  13 January 2023

Dear Parent/Carer

The New Year brings new challenges and lots of new opportunities at KSHS. Do take a look at the great range of extra-curricular clubs on offer this term and encourage your child to get involved. Many are put on at lunchtime so that students who travel on buses home are able to take part.

A less positive challenge we have faced this week is the discovery of remedial works that need completing to the ceiling in our Science block which will unfortunately take 4 Science labs out of use over coming weeks. This is due to the discovery of some crumbling concrete supports in the ceiling during routine Health and Safety site checks over the holidays. This remedial work has meant some adaptations to rooming with immediate effect. We will use the Year 12 and Year 13 common rooms, as well as a little used classroom in the school House, to create temporary Science classrooms. Sixth Form students are able to use the library for study during lessons and re-roomed form rooms at break and lunchtimes. Carre’s have also made quiet study spaces with computers, and their conservatory available for all KSHS students during the period of remedial works. My thanks to Mr R Smith, Head of Carre’s Sixth Form and his Sixth Form team for this support. Please be assured that these adaptations, albeit frustrating, will not impact on students' syllabus coverage or Sixth Formers’ Required Practicals. We still have 2 dedicated Science labs and other teaching spaces unaffected and much work is being undertaken by our Science Technicians and teaching staff to ensure uninterrupted curriculum delivery.

Please meet our new Staff members

My name is Mrs Cook and I have recently joined KSHS as the Sixth Form Pastoral Administrator. Within my role, I will be providing support with UCAS applications and submissions, Year 11 Sixth Form interviews and inductions and ensuring communication between students and teachers runs smoothly amongst other things. In addition, I am supporting the monitoring of Sixth Form attendance/ punctuality and safeguarding and so I may contact you throughout the year as required. To support the pastoral work of Miss Chant (Head of Sixth Form) and the pastoral team, I am here as a point of contact for you and Sixth Form students should you have any questions about anything, so please do feel free to contact me via either method below;

Email: Emily.Cook@kshs.uk     Telephone: 01529 414044

I’m really looking forward to working with and getting to know the Sixth Form students and supporting them during their studies here at KSHS.

My name is Miss Gray and I am thrilled to be joining the History Department at KSHS as a Teacher of History. I will be the form tutor of 8W and am looking forward to continuing their KSHS journey together. I previously worked as a Teacher of History in Nottinghamshire and am excited to be returning to the school after previously completing my Initial Teacher Training at KSHS.  Outside of school I am often found trackside as a F1 and MotoGP fan. I am looking forward to working with pupils across the school, continuing to develop a love of History.

New Menus in Dining Room

From Monday 16 January a new ‘Grab and Go’ menu style will be available in the school Dining Room as a result of a review of our catering offer. Student voice contributed significantly to the developments with some exciting new menus on offer.

Unavoidably, with food prices going up, we are having to review our prices at the same time. We will endeavour to give the students best value for money which can often be achieved by buying the ‘meal deals’, just like on the High Street. We have kept the daily hot meal deal at £2.40 or £3.00.

The new menus and prices will be available on the website from Monday 16 January Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Dining Room (kshs.uk) but do have a sneak preview below!

For any queries, please contact Catering Manager Sandra.parrott@kshs.uk

Assemblies this week

This week in assembly we have looked at importance of making mistakes and how we learn more from mistakes than by getting things right all the time. Students particularly enjoyed discussing this image used in assembly. Especially how overcoming adversity sometimes leads to greater goals in the long run. See what you think….

Playwright visit

A playwright from the National Theatre programme, Stewart Melton, visited the students taking part in the NewViews National Theatre playwriting programme at the end of last term. The playwright worked collaboratively with the students to help them generate ideas for their plays and to encourage them to begin writing their scripts. The NewViews playwright typically visits early in the programme to get to know the students, to introduce them to the play writing process and encourage them to get their first draft written prior to submission in early January. The students all thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with a ‘real’ playwright and ask him lots of questions about his career and the theatre in general. The next exciting opportunity will be for the students to watch a performance of Phaedra at the National Theatre in London.

Chemistry Students Combine Seasonal Event with Studies

As a fun way to celebrate Christmas at the end of term we made “chemis-trees” using clamp stands and flasks as decorative baubles. To achieve the range of different colours in the baubles we mixed acids and alkalis together with universal indicator. As a class we then made a nativity scene using a range of different science equipment.

The Times 'Parent Power' Rankings

If you follow our Twitter feed you will have seen we were delighted to be recognised by The Times ‘Parent Power’ publication at the end of last term for students’ successes in the GCSE and A level examinations this year. Students success placed us in the top 5 State Secondary Schools in the East Midlands. The definitive Parent Power rankings make use of the most recent public examination results. For senior schools, that includes A-level, GCSE, International Baccalaureate, Pre-U, Advanced Higher, Higher and National 5 examinations, while junior school rankings draw on outcomes for Sats taken in Year 6. https://twitter.com/kshssa/status/1610272526575308803?s=12&t=_24S8dWtCCr8B_eCe4O7hQ

Finance Department News

Cashless Payments

To streamline financial processes and enable us to work more efficiently, the Trust has moved to a completely cashless system of operation from January 2023 onwards.

The majority of payments are already received via the electronic ParentPay system, so we don’t anticipate that this change will impact greatly on parents/carers.  However, it is important that you are aware that physical cash and cheques will no longer be accepted in school.  Any cash brought to the office will be sent home with the pupil and an email will be sent to parents/carers to notify them that the payment has not been accepted.

All future payments will need to be made via ParentPay.  All parents/carers should have been set up with a ParentPay account, however, if you do not have an account and would like one setting up, please let the finance team know.  In addition if you are having problems accessing the system or making payments by this method please contact us and we will be happy to help and talk you through the process.

If you require advice or help with making payments via ParentPay please call the Finance Team on 01529 411017 or email finance@robertcarretrust.uk

Library and Literacy News

Starting in the library this term there are two new after school book clubs:

  • Wednesday Years 7-9, 3.30-4.15pm
  • Thursday Years 10 & 11, 3.30-4.15pm

Both groups will be informal, friendly and inclusive sessions that students can attend each week or drop in to if they would prefer.  We will be sharing book/genre recommendations, discussing together what we are currently reading, and choosing from a diverse collection of books to read together. There will also be book themed activities and the chance to participate in quizzes.

All reading abilities are welcome - from avid readers to those less confident who are wanting to expand their reading experiences.  This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends and spend time with fellow bookworms in the comfort of the library.

New Year new books The library is constantly updating its collection and there is an exciting range of the latest fiction now available to browse and borrow from. Students are encouraged to make their own book suggestions in our recommendations book situated on the main library desk, and especially after Christmas as many new books will have been gifted, it is a good opportunity to share recommendations with each other. Staff throughout the school also share their love of reading with students by displaying What I am currently reading posters in their classrooms.

Library Opening times The library is open and staffed from 8.30am-4.30pm Monday-Thursday and 8.30am-4pm Friday. Students may access the library before school from 8.30am if they wish to use the computers, printer or borrow or return library books, and for the same purpose after school for homework club. The library is a learning resource facility that is primarily dedicated to enhancing student learning, not for more generalised socialising.  Students may access their form rooms prior to registration for this purpose.

The Importance of School Attendance

Attendance

We know that attendance at school is a vital part of children’s ongoing development and outcomes and at Kesteven and Sleaford High School:  academic success and securing post-16 choices are significantly increased by maintaining excellent attendance. Maintaining 100% attendance means that students do not miss any learning which they would later need to catch up on and are well-placed to overcome any of the obstacles presented by unavoidable absence from school over the last two years. Last term in excess of 100 students achieved 100% attendance emails home and we know that this requires persistence and support from parents and carers.  The infographic below shows how every day counts in terms of your child’s attendance. We know that sometimes absences are unavoidable and students do become unwell (particularly at this time of year).

Reporting absences

If you know your child is going to be absent, please use the school’s absence reporting line to do this. Please don’t email individual members of staff and please ensure that your child’s name and form is included in any message. If your child has received an injury and they are coming to school on crutches please ensure you have informed the school of this prior to them presenting in school. We have a duty of care to ensure they are able to move around the site safely and responsibly and without prior knowledge, this can be difficult to ensure.

Uniform / Makeup

Finally, can we remind you of our makeup rules in school. Students should not be wearing fake tan, eyelash extensions, or fake nails (including acrylic nails).  For further clarification please do re-read the schools uniform policy at Kesteven & Sleaford High School - Uniform (kshs.uk). Students will  lose break or lunchtimes for persistent uniform infringements.

Wellbeing for All

We hope that the break enabled you and your families to have some valuable time together and that you feel refreshed and ready for 2023.

As part of our Wellbeing strategy in school our Wellbeing Ambassadors are available for students to talk to at lunchtimes in our Wellbeing Hub. They are there to listen non-judgementally and support young people with whatever their concerns are – big or small. Please do remind your child that this is something that they can access should they feel they need any help whatsoever. As part of their work the Wellbeing Ambassadors also produce a termly Agony Aunt column which is displayed around the school and on school notice boards. This term’s edition is below and it gives you an insight in to some of the topics that are discussed in the column. In addition, the Wellbeing Ambassadors can also be contacted via email on wellbeingambassadors@kshs.uk. This is an email address that is monitored during the working week.
