Term 1  -  20 October 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

It’s a packed newsletter this week and as we head into the half-term break I hope you find something of interest and get a sense of just how busy staff and students have been, both in and out of the classroom.

Many thanks to the 323 parents and carers who responded to our uniform survey. There were some really helpful comments and some common themes about some adjustments we can make to ensure the uniform is even better value and readily accessible.  In the next newsletter we will summarise your views in more detail and let you know what amendments we will be making. 92% of you agreed that the current uniform and PE kit provided an appropriate sense of identity and community so any changes we will make aim to maintain that. Our changes won’t replace the skirt or blazer, but we will be ensuring that several other elements of the uniform are more cost-effective as and when you need to replace them. All current uniform will, of course, be able to be worn until it is outgrown. More details to follow next term.

Parent Governor Election September 2022

We are delighted to announce that the election process is now complete and we offer a big welcome our two new Parent Governors, Cheryl Johnson and Aby Barker, who will be joining the KSHS Local Governance Tier.

Thank you to everyone who took part, including the other three candidates (the voting was very close!) and everyone who joined in with the new MS Forms online voting system which was a first for us. It seemed to work well from our point of view, but we would welcome any feedback you may have so that we can refine the process for future elections. Please email elections@robertcarretrust.uk with any comments.

Library and Literacy News

Black History Month

The library has a fantastic range of books on display highlighting the important historical and modern-day challenges of people of colour in the UK and throughout the world.  Fiction and nonfiction titles suitable for all key stage abilities are available to borrow or can be browsed in the library display area throughout October

Celebrating reading in our school

Students will have noticed that classroom doors around the school are displaying what our teaching and support staff are currently reading; helping our students to appreciate that reading for pleasure at any age is a great way to relax, expand knowledge and vocabulary and develop empathy and understanding.  Recommending books to each other in our communities, whether at school or beyond, is fantastic for creating connections and discovering new titles that we as readers might not have previously considered.

Book of the Month  Black Brother Black Brother by Jewell Parker Rhodes is an emotionally gripping story about one boy’s path to finding his voice in the fight against racism.  Suitable for Key Stage 3 readers, the library has multiple copies for loan as part of the Booktrust collection that promotes getting children reading.

Word of the week Students can expand their vocabulary by checking in their planners for the Word of the Week. This is a quick and accessible way to learn a new word and we encourage all our students to find ways of incorporating the new word into their daily conversations.  Included are synonyms and antonyms, so extra words and knowledge are provided in one easy glance.

Maths News

Supporting your child with Maths outside the classroom

Firstly the Maths department would like to say what a fantastic term we have had and how impressed we are by the work ethic of our pupils. Across the year groups pupils have been enthusiastic with their learning and participation in lessons has been wonderful to see-well done all!

As a department we appreciate the apprehension pupils may feel when completing homework without the support of a teacher or peer nearby and we would like to take this opportunity to provide useful hints and tips for our pupils and their parents/carers:

  • Spend no more than the prescribed amount of time on homework. If you have been given a homework and told this should be for one homework slot please spend no more than this time on it. Quality of work is better than quantity of work. When you are set homework ensure you have written clearly in your planner how long you should spend on your homework and when it is due-your teacher will tell you this information in class
  • Use the Mathswatch clips as laid out in your pupil booklet to help. You can also use the search bar on Mathswatch to find a clip on any topic. If you are unsure on how to use Mathswatch there is a help guide in the ‘extra’ section
  • Ask any member of the Maths department for help – we love Maths and we love helping you to make progress!
  • Ask a family member for help. The following website has useful advice for parents and guardians who would like more advice on how to support their child in Maths Current teaching methods & helping with homework | nn.org (nationalnumeracy.org.uk)

Lastly, we know that some pupils really want to combine their enjoyment of Maths with their passion for reading, so we would like to direct pupils to the following website which has a wide range of recreational Maths books to enjoy.

Weekly Conundrum

Can you solve the puzzle below?

Write your name and form on your solution and hand in to the maths department by Friday 4 November. Each entry is a merit, with a weekly prize drawn for correct solutions.

If four times the smaller of two numbers is three times the larger and the difference between them is 18.

What is the larger number?

Year 11 Mock Exams

The Mock Examination Timetable for Year 11 will be issued to students and their parents/carers on the first Monday back after the half-term break, 31 October 2022. We know that many students are keen to receive the timetable but always aim to issue details two weeks prior to an assessment week. We encourage students to have a rest and a break from work over the half-term holiday so that they are refreshed and ready for the forthcoming term.

European Day of Languages

Monday 26 September was European Day of Languages and as usual we celebrated in style! There was lots going on including free European Food Tasters in the canteen. There was also a variety of form time quizzes including one where students matched the teachers with their language links – who knew so many teachers had studied languages and lived abroad?

The big event was the Great European Bake Off which was even bigger than last year! We had a huge number of entries, especially from Years 7 and 8 and it was incredibly hard for our expert judging panel to choose winners. Pupils were invited to bake a cake or cupcakes with a European theme. Winners were chosen and then the cakes were sold at lunchtime to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care. We raised over £170 which is amazing!

The talented bakers who win ‘Star Baker’ prizes were:

Best Bake: Libby-Mae 7APO

Best Presentation: Grace 7APO

Best on Theme: Annalie 7APO

We would also like to mention some other great entries from Faye 8L, Amy 8L, Jessica 7KR, Ella-Rose 7APO and Kitty 7APO. Thank you to everyone who put so much time and effort into entering and raising so much money for a very worthy cause – including parents and carers at home!

Kesteven Rugby Afternoon

KS3 students had the opportunity to spend the afternoon at Kesteven Rugby Club with students from other Sleaford schools. The session was led by the fantastic coaches at Kesteven. Players learned new skills and also how to use tackle bags safely in the lead up to playing contact Rugby. The afternoon culminated in a touch Rugby match. All students were presented with a new gum shield as they left.

Student success - Karate

Congratulations to Amelia who won gold in kata 10-14 years and silver in kumite (free sparring) 10-14 years at the JKA (Japan Karate Association) Central & North region championships in Hatfield.

Student Success – Fencing

Sophie 10LR was entered in the Highland Open up in Elign, Moray, Scotland. In her first round of poles, she came 20th but in her 2nd round of poles she had a stroke of bad luck and dropped a place. In the first round of direct eliminations she won the match 15, 11 to her but in her second round of direct eliminations she lost 5, 15 to her opponent.

Well done, Sophie!

Wellbeing for All

This term the Year 13 Wellbeing Ambassadors have introduced themselves to the lower school in a series of assemblies. The Ambassadors have received training in aspects of children’s mental health and are students who are genuinely interested in listening to young people and their worries, no matter how small. They run weekly drop-in clinics every Wednesday and Friday at Break 2 in the Wellbeing Hub and any student is welcome to come and talk to them if they want someone to chat to – no appointment is necessary.  There is also a termly Agony Aunt column that can be seen around the school on noticeboards and Form boards. Students can email their concerns wellbeingambassadors@kshs.uk. The Wellbeing Ambassadors can be picked out by the smiley face badge they wear.
