Term 6 - 22 July 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

What a joy it has been to celebrate all students’ hard work this year with some great end of term High School traditions. Sports Day on Thursday, and Junior Prize Giving and the Big School Picnic on Friday, have rounded off a warm week and a busy summer term. These events were a great opportunity to work as teams, celebrate hard work and enjoy each other’s friendship and company.

Monday and Tuesday of course saw soaring temperatures but the adjustments we made in school meant we were able to keep learning. After the school closures of the past two years and the resilience we know High School students can show I was really proud to see students maintaining their good humour, cooling down with ice lollies at lunchtime and making the best of an uncomfortable situation. We talk a lot in school about resilience and making the best of tricky situations: here was a chance to put words and encouragement into action.

I hope the weather remains sunny (but comfortable) wherever you and your family are this summer break. We open again to students in Years 7, 12 and 13 on Tuesday 6 September and all year groups on Wednesday 7 September. Until then thank you for all your support, kind words and appreciation of staff’s efforts throughout the year.

Mrs J Smith

Head of School

Library News

Summertime reading is a great way to relax, and although the school library is closed over the summer break, there are plenty of other ways to access great reading material.

Our eBook reading App-Wheelers offers a great collection of books to downloaded for free. Students can access this resource by following the online learning link via the school website.

Visit your local library where you will find a large selection of fiction and nonfiction, manga and more.  Many libraries run summer reading incentives, which might be of particular interest to younger students.

If buying books is your thing, then why not visit a National Trust property and explore one of the well-stocked second-hand book shops.

TOP TIPS FOR SUMMERTIME READING

  • Create your very own reading corner, indoors or out- find that special quiet place to curl up with a book and relax.
  • Recommend to your family and friends. Sharing your good reads is a great way to discover new books.
  • Reading a magazine or newspaper increases your wordcount too.
  • Don’t forget that if you binged on a boxset, it was probably an even better book first!
  • Explore new genres and step beyond your reading comfort zone.

Whatever and wherever you read this summer, remember that reading is great for your mental health and wellbeing, expands your knowledge, empathy and understanding of the wider world and takes you to places beyond your imagination.

Wellbeing for All

As we get every closer to the school holidays and look forward to an opportunity to recharge, we have to also remember that some young people may find themselves struggling without the structure and support network of school.

The Anna Freud National Centre of Children and Families has produced some really excellent resources for secondary school aged students and these packs (#SelfCareSummer) feature a range of creative activities based on self-care strategies that other young people have found useful in helping them stay mentally healthy. You could print the self-care summer guide here, or go to this link to explore a range of other resources for children and young people. Or, you can go to this link and use the flipbook:

My self-care plan: secondary (annafreud.org)

They also signpost young people and their families to additional support, including the AFC crisis messenger text service.

If you are a young person looking for immediate support visit this page for ChildLine, Samaritans and the Emergency services:

On My Mind: Urgent Help for young people with their mental health (annafreud.org)

Wishing you a restful enjoyable summer holiday from everyone on the Wellbeing team at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.

Spotlight on Sport

Swimming competition – RCT v Stamford schools

KSHS and Carres Grammar school swam together as the Robert Carre Trust swimming team. We travelled to Stamford where students competed in mixed age group races which included individual races, team medleys and team relays. Stamford won but all swimmers from RCT were fantastic; some students were competing and representing KSHS for their first time. Well done to all!

PE trip to UEFA women’s Euro England 2022 - France v Belgium

Fifty students and staff travelled to Rotherham to watch France play Belgium in the group stage of the UEFA women’s Euro 2022 competition.

It was a fantastic experience, particularly after we were upgraded to VIP seats which gave us a great view from the halfway line. We were even more excited to see we had been captured on BBC1 when the match was broadcast live on TV!
