Term 1 - 9 September 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

A very warm welcome to you all at the start of this new academic year. An especially warm welcome to all parents and carers whose children have joined the High School community this week. As you can see from the photos taken on Tuesday it’s been lovely to help Year 7 students discover school routines.

There is much to do at the start of term so this short newsletter celebrates the first week back and introduces you to some of our new staff as well as recognising that the week has ended with the more sombre news of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's death.

The newsletter also flags some topics we will explore further in forthcoming editions. Please read on to find out about becoming a parent governor at the school; our planned response to the government’s advice on making school uniform best value for parents and extracurricular clubs and activities your child can sign up for soon.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday evening.  In June the whole school celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee, coming together as a community of staff and students to rejoice in her service to this country and appreciate the many ways society had changed during her reign. Next week in school that period of rejoicing will be replaced with a chance for students to reflect on her lifetime of duty with affection and respect. We will come together again as a school community to appreciate our longest serving monarch’s life which was marked by a sense of duty and conducted with dignity and poise. In assembly and tutor time students will have the chance to appreciate the significance of the Queen’s reign and as one royal era comes to an end we will look ahead to the reign of King Charles III.

New Staff Members

{alt_tag}

My name is Miss Ferns and I am delighted to have joined Kesteven and Sleaford High School as Assistant Headteacher in charge of Teaching and Learning. I previously worked in Ilkeston, Derbyshire as Head of Modern Foreign Languages for several years, and continue teaching French and German in my new role. I am a keen musician, playing in a local orchestra, and enjoy being a member of Girlguiding UK, running my own Guide unit in Mansfield for 6 years prior to moving to Lincolnshire.

My name is Mrs Ramsay and I am the Subject Leader for Business.  I am an experienced teacher having spent many years teaching A-Level, GCSE and vocational Business Studies.  I have a passion for creating the entrepreneurs and the business leaders of the future through a subject that is dynamic, ever changing and engaging.  I am the form tutor for 7KR. My previous work includes being Head of Business and Enterprise, Head of Years 10 and 11 and an Assistant Headteacher all at a school in Lincoln where I worked for many years.  I am very pleased and proud to be a member of staff at KSHS and I look forward to many happy years here.  I am pleased to take over the leadership of a very successful subject area academically.  Outside of school, I am an avid theatre goer, with musical theatre as my main interest.  I am a regular West-End visitor and my ideal day would be wandering around London and taking in a show.

My name is Miss Adamson and I am very excited to be joining the Drama department at KSHS as a Drama Teacher. I will also be the form tutor of 7PA and I look forward to starting our KSHS journey together. I am a newly qualified teacher, however I have lots of experience working with children and young people through my previous work as a performer and workshop leader. I am very passionate about Drama and the Arts and I have worked as a professional actress in the theatre industry since graduating from Drama school and University. This experience and passion is something I am hoping to share with my students through exciting, engaging and motivating lessons. The Drama department is a really exciting place to be with loads of opportunities for pupils to get involved. One of the things I’m most looking forward to is directing the school musical alongside Mrs Thomas (Subject Leader - Drama).

Parent Governor Vacancies

Are you interested in becoming a Parent Governor at KSHS. The Local Governance Tier currently has two vacancies for Parent Governors. If you'd like to get to know the school better and play a role in ensuring good governance for the benefit of all students, staff and community, please look out for nomination papers being sent to all parents/carers, or contact the Clerk on elections@robertcarretrust.uk. The closing date for nominations is Friday 16 September at 12 noon.

Uniform

The Government has asked all schools to look at ways to make uniform best value for parents/carers and we are keen to consult with you on how best to achieve this by the start of next academic year whilst preserving the advantages and traditions that our High School uniform brings. Please watch out for an invitation to provide your thoughts via a quick online survey later this autumn term. Please be assured (especially if you have just kitted your child out for the year ahead) that all current uniform will remain valid for as long as it fits and any changes will only be made if they provide better value for parents/carers in the long run. This is also a good time to remind parents/carers whose children qualify for the Pupil Premium that they can claim £100 annually to support the cost of uniform including school shoes or PE kit and that the fantastic PTA run a pre-loved uniform shop. KSHS Uniform For Sale (padlet.com)

Lost Property

We still have a collection of lost property from last academic year. Students have been invited to view it in the hall before the end of next week when it will be disposed of, sent to charity shops or recycled in our pre loved uniform shop. Please encourage your child to have a look at break or lunchtime if they are missing items from last year.

Extracurricular Clubs

Details of extracurricular clubs your child can sign up for will be made available to them next week, including the chance to attend our Freshers Fayre in the afternoon on Wednesday 14 September where students get to visit the hall, talk to staff and sixth form students about clubs they can join, and sign up for them. Do encourage your child to get involved!
