Term 5 - 13 May 2022

Dear Parent/Carer

As you receive this newsletter staff in school will have delivered their last ‘formal’ lessons to Year 11 and wished them well in a celebration assembly. We will soon be wishing Year 13 all the best with their independent revision too.

Many schools no longer offer ‘Study Leave’ during the external examinations, but we recognise that in our school setting students need, and welcome, the chance to structure their own revision programmes from home as the exam season starts. Of course, that doesn’t work for all students, so we have made practical and specific provision for all Year 11 and Year 13 students who wish to study at school throughout the exam season. Until their final exams in each subject students are welcome to continue to seek the support of their teachers by visiting their usual classrooms in line with their timetable. Classrooms are scheduled all day too for students who choose to work in school or for those who need a quiet place to work before catching public transport home. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you would like your child to remain at school all day during the exam period and please be aware that students will be told that if they leave school during normal school hours they must sign out and return home directly. Year 11 are not permitted to go into town or visit local parks for example during lesson times and must sign in and out of the school reception any time they arrive or leave.

Given the upheaval of the last few years for all our students we are particularly keen to wish them the best of luck with all their exams and hope that they will soon be able to look forward to a long summer ahead of work experience, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, NCS involvement, Prom preparation or Sixth Form Induction.

Mrs J Smith

Head of School

Be part of our Governance Team

We would love to hear from you or someone you know.

Would you, or someone you know, like to influence KSHS strategy? Do you have time to give, to support the work of staff in school by challenging and supporting us to keep improving?

We are looking for several Community Governors, and will shortly be looking for Parent Governors to join our KSHS Local Governing Tier. This group directly influences decisions that are made at the school and is suitable for someone who is fully employed or is great role for a part-time or recently retired person.

No experience as an educational professional is required and the Community Governor role doesn’t require you to have a child at the school. All you need is a keen interest in young people and their educational experience at Kesteven and Sleaford High School.

Meetings take place from 6-8pm six times a year, and the group spends an afternoon in July training, planning and meeting with Board members. In addition, there are lots of opportunities to focus on a particular aspect of school life and visit the school to see it in action. Full training is given and it is possible to join meetings online when it’s difficult to make it face to face.

This is a great time to join an expanding team with several positions available. More details will follow but if you would like to know more, please contact the clerk to the governors Debbie.scott@robertcarretrust.uk or make an appointment to visit the school and find out more about us.  We would love to hear from you.

What Parents/Carers Need to Know about Group Chats

Below, you will see a guide from our National Online Safety partners to group chats.  Taking place through messaging apps, on social media and in online games, group chats are among the most popular ways for young people to engage with their peers online. Involving, by definition, three or more individuals, these groups allow users to send messages, images and videos to everyone in one place. While they are useful for helping friends, people with shared interests or members of a club to communicate and coordinate activities, they can also leave young people feeling excluded and bullied – as well as providing opportunities for inappropriate content to be shared and viewed. In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as bullying, inappropriate content and unknown members.

FREE Online Safety Question and Answer Event

A Date with Dan Wednesday 18 May 6.30pm-7.30pm

Online safety can be a bit of a minefield and many of us have lots of questions on how we can not only keep our children and young people safe but also let them enjoy the benefits the online world brings. After our last Q and A event earlier this year, many parents and carers asked for another opportunity to ask us some questions.

Join our resident Online Safety Officer, Dan Hawbrook, on the 18 May 2022 for a special Question and Answer session for parents and carers which will cover whatever YOU want to know – whether it's game ratings, parental controls, bullying or strangers – we will let you ask us those burning questions.

Sign up will be required to access this session.  A Date with Dan Tickets, Wed 18 May 2022 at 18:30 | Eventbrite

Growth Mindset

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, in tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough they will persevere.
