Term 6 - 12 June 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

At KSHS, we place great importance on ensuring that every young person feels heard, valued and able to influence their future. I am therefore drawing your attention to a national opportunity for your child to have their voice heard.

We have recently been contacted by the Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, who is leading a major national survey called The Big Future.

This survey aims to gather the views, experiences and aspirations of children and young people across the country, helping to shape future policy at the very highest level of government.

How your child can take part

The survey is quick and accessible, and can be completed online here Take part in The Big Future survey

How you can help as a parent/carer

We would be very grateful for your support in encouraging your child to take part. You may wish to:

  • Share with them the opportunity and its importance
  • Set aside a few minutes at home for them to complete the survey
  • Talk with them about their views and aspirations beforehand and maybe even fill in in the survey together

We will also be promoting the survey in school.

Why this matters

At a time of significant change for young people, it has never been more important that their voices are listened to. This survey provides a direct route for students’ views to reach government decision-makers, ensuring their experiences help shape future education and wider youth policy.

Thank you, as always, for your support in helping our students engage with opportunities that enable them to contribute meaningfully to society. By taking part, they are not only sharing their own experiences but helping to amplify the voices of young people across England.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Turns 70!

This year marks an incredible milestone as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award celebrates its 70th anniversary.

To commemorate this special occasion, Mrs Banks and Mr Cook, our DofE Managers, along with some of our Gold Award students, were honoured to be invited to the Gold Award Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. The event was a fantastic celebration of the achievements of young people across the country and featured inspiring speeches reflecting the vision and legacy of the Duke of Edinburgh himself, as well as contributions from a number of well-known guests and celebrities.

It has been a privilege to support our students throughout their DofE journeys at Bronze, Silver and Gold level. Along the way, we have watched them develop confidence, resilience and determination, while gaining valuable life skills and creating lasting memories through their experiences.

Across the trust, Between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026 for all award levels, our students have spent 4,277 hours volunteering in their communities. What an amazing achievement!

We are incredibly proud of all our participants and look forward to welcoming new and returning students to the programme next year.

If you would like to start or continue your DofE journey in 2026–2027, please speak to your DofE Managers in school for more information.

Year 12 Geography and Biology trip to Gibraltar Point

{item_alt_tag}

On Thursday 21st May, the Year 12 Geography and Biology students at KSHS attended a trip to Gibraltar Point, just south of Skegness to investigate the sand dunes and salt marshes located there. Gibraltar Point is a nature reserve managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, famous for its wildlife and scenic coastal features, which we were able to visit and assess the landscapes created at this location.

First, we took a guided tour through the reserve until we reached the sand dunes, where we then discussed the formation of them along with what is needed for these features to form. In groups, we took measurements of a plethora of things along a 40m transect including temperature and wind speed at height and ground level, infiltration rate, dune profile and identified any specific plants in the quadrat we placed along the transect.

After that, we moved over to the salt marshes, seeing some seals along our walk, and talked about how salt marshes are created. We continued with our measurements in the upper and middle zones where we used a point transect in randomly generated areas to measure temperature and wind speed along with identifying species of plants in the different zones.

Overall, we had a great day by the sea learning all about coastal landforms and plant species that will be beneficial to our courses, both geography and biology.

Year 9 France and Belgium Trip

Bonjour! 94 students from Year 9 visited France and Belgium last week as part of their History and French studies and we think they would say that their trip was fantastique!

After a very early 4.30am start on Day 1, we made our way over the channel and spent our first afternoon visiting Langemark German cemetery and Tyne Cot British cemetery. Pupils were able to compare the two and see the contrast in how fallen German and British soldiers are remembered. We arrived at the hostel where we had dinner and then got settled into our rooms.

Day 2 was a busy day with some really interesting visits. We visited the Thiepval memorial, which commemorates soldiers lost in the Battles of the Somme who have no known grave. We also had a trip down into the Wellington Quarries where we donned our helmets to learn all about the history of the quarries and the Battle of Arras. In addition to this, we had the chance to shop in a French supermarket and had some free time in Ypres with a visit to a Belgian chocolate shop. Lots of sugar was purchased!

Over the course of Days 1 and 2, we were able to find the names of relatives of several students and staff and lay some wreaths in memoriam. These were very poignant, thought-provoking experiences.

On Day 3 we moved away from History and popped over into France for a French day! We visited a snail farm where we learnt fascinating facts about the lives of snails and then we got to handle them. Most students were very brave and tested out the snails’ magical moisturising properties! This was followed by a tasting session that left a very garlicky taste. We also visited Le Touquet, a beautiful French seaside town where students completed a town trail and practised their French in the various shops and ice cream parlours along the way. We were super impressed with the French used by students to order many ice creams and baguettes! This day finished with a visit to the Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony, which takes place every single day of the year. Here too, several students found the names of their relatives.

Finally, on Day 4, before travelling home, we visited the museum and gardens at Passchendaele, a fascinating place where students learnt about many aspects of the war including trenches, weapons, uniforms and accommodation.

We would like to say a big thank you to Year 9, who were brilliant – we had compliments about their behaviour, manners and the respect they showed on every visit we made, as well as in the hostel we stayed in. Our thanks also to all the staff (both in school and who joined us on the trip) – without their support these trips would not be possible.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
