Term 5 - 22 May 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

As we approach the half-term break, I wanted to share just how proud I feel of our students and the High School community. It has been a busy few weeks with some marked endings for Year 11 and 13 students, but also one filled with many moments of kindness, resilience and achievement.

I have been particularly impressed this week by our Year 9 students, and their engagement during the recent World of Work Day. Their enthusiasm and curiosity impressed visitors and they embraced the careers day with a positive and purposeful attitude. Please do read on in this edition to find out more about their experience. My thanks to all those employers in our local community who contributed to the day. Have a look at our latest news feature (linked below and on our website) to see one ex-student turned presenter's experience of the day.

A heartfelt thank you must go to our Head of Year 11 and Head of Sixth Form for organising such thoughtful and memorable farewell events for our senior students whose GCSE and A Level examinations are now well underway.The occasion was enhanced by emotional speeches from form tutors, some fantastic form group videos and the genuine sense of community and belonging in the hall in the final assemblies.

Finally well done to Key Stage 3 students who have been busily applying themselves to their annual assessment weeks. After some conscientious preparation, and form time spent developing revision skills, students are eager to receive feedback in coming weeks and tracking reports will be on their way to parents next term too.

Looking ahead, Term 6 promises a wide range of opportunities for students to contribute to school life. Many we hope  will take on important roles as tour guides at our Open Evening on 30 June, while others will represent the school in a variety of trips, sports fixtures and events.

With warmer temperatures forecast over the break, I very much hope that families are able to enjoy some sunshine and spend valuable time together. A great chance to rest and recharge ready for the final stretch of the academic year.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Headteacher

Year 9 - 'World of Work' Day

{item_alt_tag}
{item_alt_tag}

On Tuesday Year 9 participated in a ‘World of Work’ day, where they had the opportunity to hear from a range of professionals in different fields. This day is part of our varied Careers Programme at KSHS where students can learn about different paths open to them and start to explore their career ideas.

Following an introduction to the day, students had 10 sessions with different employers, some of whom are alumni of the school and others who are parents. Visitors gave a talk on their career and what it involved, including routes into the profession and what skills were required. Our visitors included two midwives, a mortgage/financial advisor, a graphic designer, a clinical practitioner in emergency medicine, a police sergeant, a HR manager for a Defence company, an entrepreneur and owner of an equine retirement stables, a primary school deputy headteacher, a skin specialist and a biomedical scientist.

Year 9 remained very engaged all day, asking questions and completing a fact-file style booklet about each career. They had the chance to win sweets and raffle tickets for asking questions and participating; the raffle will be drawn on Friday.

When asked what they enjoyed about the day, these were some of the answers:

“Learning about their experiences that lead to them getting the job they have, e.g. travelling, apprenticeships”

“I liked the police sergeant part because it was interesting listening to all the parts that you have to do to be a police sergeant.”

“I enjoyed Emily Lloyd's session (ACHP), she was engaging and her job is most closely linked to my idea of a career in healthcare.”

“Session 7 with Bryony Mason (deputy headteacher) because I enjoyed how she explained different challenges on her way to get to her career.”

“The equine care session because it helped me learn about entrepreneurship and resilience”.

I would like to thank all our visitors for giving up their time so generously to plan and deliver their sessions in an engaging way.

Staff Walk The Viking Way

{item_alt_tag}

In the Autumn Term of the 2024/25 academic year, a group of staff (and some additional family members and pets!) embarked on the Viking Way.  This is a 149 mile long distance walk from the Humber Bridge to Oakham, Rutland; meandering through many villages and much countryside along the way. Rather than do the whole route in one go (!) it was broken down into 11 more 'manageable' chunks, one per half-term (so we saw all the seasons). The final section was completed this weekend! Well done to all the staff involved!

Library and Literacy News

As the National Year of Reading reaches its halfway point- there are still plenty of ways to encourage readers of all ages to pick up a book- re engage with reading or help someone else with their reading journey.  The key message is to GO All IN- If you’re into it read into it, and this reinforces the importance of reading as an activity that can and should incorporate our curiosities, hobbies and interests.  To help our students to develop their reading, visits to the school or public library can play a vital role in supporting, advising and encouraging. Librarians are uniquely placed as community pillars, information curators and passionate advocates, with libraries themselves providing an inclusive, safe space to explore who we are through the power of reading.

How can the National Year of Reading help?

  • Young people's interests and cultural worlds develop and become part of their identity as they grow into teenagers.

  • Music, sport, gaming, film, fashion and social issues really matter.

  • Rather than positioning reading as an extra, the National Year of Reading aims to meet young people where they are and show how reading can help them get more from the things they care about

  • Because when reading reflects what young people care about – no matter the format – it’s more likely to happen, and more likely to stick.

For more information on how we can help engage people of all ages with reading, please visit National Year of Reading 2026 | Go All In

What’s new in the library

In the KSHS library, our book collections are continually evolving to include the latest in teen fiction, classics, graphic novels and non-fiction. This term our Library Captains have been busy unwrapping boxes of new books and preparing them to be added to the collection. All our students are invited to have their say on the library’s collection through personal recommendations; listening to the student voice and understanding what our young people want to read is an important element of curating the library collection, and wherever possible, and subject to suitability, books and magazines are procured that reflect the varied interests, topics and genres that our young people are interested in.

Wheelers Ebook resource. From May the Wheelers eBook App will no longer be available.  There has been a significant reduction in uptake of this resource over the past year, in part due to the drive to encourage students away from phones and screens.  In the KSHS library we have seen an increase in demand for physical books and therefore, this and budgetary consideration has led to the decision to concentrate on the physical collections rather than digital subscriptions. Should students wish to continue to read in a digital format, they can be signposted to Lincolnshire Libraries excellent digital services. Lincolnshire Libraries

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
