Term 5 - 8 May 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

It may have been a short working week for all of us, but we've managed to pack lots in as ever at the High School. Firstly, I want to commend the focus, effort and commitment of all our students undertaking either internal or external examinations this week.

Year 9 and 12 students have been testing their knowledge and application in internal examinations, whilst modern foreign language students in Year 11 have undertaken their nerve-racking speaking exams and I'm sure they are glad to have those out of the way.

Elsewhere in other years, we have welcomed primary school students into the school for our annual dance festival and lower school students have taken part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) day.

Next week we have interviews for a couple of teaching staff who will start with us in September. Popularity for places at the school means that in Year 7 there will be 5 forms and so we are interviewing for members of staff in Science and in Geography; both to add additional capacity in Humanities but also to replace Mrs Martin, our current Head of Science who has taken up an exciting opportunity elsewhere in the autumn.

We look forward to talking to parents of Year 10 students next week at our virtual parents evening. If you are a parent of a child in this year group, please do look out for our parents' survey that will follow on from this parents' evening. We genuinely welcome your views and use them to inform our planning for next academic year.

As well as helping Year 11 and Year 13 students through their final preparations, staff are busy planning all sorts of fun activities that make terms 5 and 6 such a celebration of learning at the High School, but for now, please do enjoy reading of student successes over the past two weeks.

Headteacher

Duke of Edinburgh

The start of the Duke of Edinburgh expedition season took place over the weekend of 25/26 April. The weather welcomed us with dry, warm days and a very cold night. Our Bronze cohort completed their practice expedition in the Folkingham area. Group 16’s experience is described below.

Mrs E Banks

DofE Co-ordinator

Our Duke of Edinburgh Bronze practice was a very fun, tiring and challenging experience. Our leader, Andy, was very helpful when we were lost and unable to retrace our steps and find where we were on the map. We learnt that we had to hold the map the correct way up very early on as we ended up taking a two-hour detour in the wrong direction!

We made fun out of walking by seeing who could have the most flowers in their hair-which was a lot.

Even though at times we didn’t think it would be possible, we survived with a few challenges. For example, running out of water, blisters and getting chased by wild cows which some members wanted to pet whilst others really did not.

Overall, it was an experience we will never forget, and we are looking forward to the assessed expedition next month.

Group 16!

Year 8 STEM Day

{item_alt_tag}
{item_alt_tag}

Last week Year 8 students at KSHS took part in an exciting STEM Day (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The day featured a range of engaging sessions delivered by both school staff and external organisations, giving students valuable insight into the wide variety of STEM careers available.

The RAF led interactive workshops exploring engineering careers within the force. Students took part in a hands-on challenge to design and construct a device that would allow an egg to land safely; mirroring the technology used to protect pilots during ejection from aircraft. The RAF also spoke about a range of career options, and shared experiences of their own career paths within the RAF

The Initiative for Interstellar Studies (I4IS) delivered a fascinating session titled “Skateboards to Starships.” This workshop introduced students to the possibilities of engineering in the field of interstellar exploration, while also linking their current physics studies to real-world applications and future career pathways. Their mathematical skills were certainly put to the test, exploring maths which they are yet to encounter within their lessons.

Students also participated in the Step into the NHS competition, researching the diverse range of careers within the NHS and gaining a broader understanding of opportunities in healthcare. With over 350 careers on offer in the NHS, there really is a career for anyone in the healthcare sector.

Siemens Energy provided an engaging, hands-on session using construction kits, allowing students to explore engineering principles in a practical way. We were fortunate to welcome a range of visitors—from experienced engineers to apprentices—who shared their personal journeys and insights into working in STEM industries.

Overall, the day was a great success, and students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It is hoped that many were inspired to consider a future in engineering or other STEM fields.

For students in Years 7 and 8 who are particularly interested in engineering, the Raytheon Quadcopter Challenge—launching next term—offers an exciting opportunity. Participants will design and build their own quadcopters, with the chance to compete against other schools. Students interested in taking part should speak to Mr Norris for further information.

Geography News

In recent weeks, the Year 7 geographers have been introduced to fieldwork enquiry by investigating the microclimate of the KSHS school grounds. They investigated which site would be the most suitable to locate a new school bench. Students used anemometers to measure wind speed and thermometers to measure temperature. They annotated photographs and considered aspect and surface of the ground in their decision-making. This primary data will be presented, analysed and evaluated in forthcoming lessons. We are looking forward to reading their reports and hearing their recommendations.

Namibia Fundraising

In July, students in Years 11 and 12 across KSHS and CGS will be undertaking an expedition in Namibia.  Part of this trip includes working in a rural Namibian school.  Over the past few months, we have been raising money to replace the blankets and mattresses in the hostel blocks at the schools.  I am happy to announce that we have exceeded our target and have raised a total of £5995.  We will now liaise with the three schools and order all the equipment that they need.  We will also be able to buy school books and stationery.  Thank you so much to all the students who have worked hard to achieve this target, and to all parents/family members who have supported them!

Students have also been working hard to fundraise towards the cost of their own trips.  I have been blown away by the efforts of many of the students.  Some students have covered the cost of the whole expedition through fundraising! They have been carrying out activities such as:

Village bingo nights

Vinted sales

Car boots

Sponsored walks and runs

Cleaning

Care for elderly relatives

Well done to each and every one of you! I look forward to spending time with you all in Namibia.

Careers News

On Friday 1 May Year 9 students had the opportunity to attend a lunchtime talk given by medical students from Lincoln University. They were given an overview of the application process for Medicine, which is very competitive, an insight into university life, information about the different careers and specialties related to Medicine, the kind of skills that doctors need, and then were able to do an activity using a pulse oximeter, which is a commonly used piece of medical equipment. One group held their breath and measured their oxygen levels, while the others did star jumps to see how their oxygen levels were affected.

Hopefully this will be the start of a partnership with the ‘Lincs to Medicine’ programme that will support students in all aspects of exploring options through to applications as they progress through school.

Student sporting success – Equestrian

Congratulations to Sophie and her horse NikNak, who performed a lovely, solid test for their first proper British Dressage competition. Sophie was the only teenager competing at her level, she still got a lovely rosette!

We wish you the best of luck in your future events!

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
