Term 5 - 24 April 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

It has been a pleasure to welcome students back for such a sunny and positive start to the term.

As exams draw closer, we have been hugely impressed by the focus, resilience and work ethic shown by our Year 11 and Year 13 students, we know that the Easter holidays were a combination of sleep and revision for many of them and we wish them every success in the weeks ahead. Finally, good luck to all our Modern Foreign Language students who have forthcoming speaking assessments – we know how hard they have been preparing and are confident they will do themselves proud.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support as parents– particularly for working with us so constructively as we reassert our tight mobile phone expectations. We appreciate parents’ understanding and engagement in this area and know many of you will be aware of the ongoing national debate around mobile phones in schools. We will be sharing some updated guidance later this year, ahead of September, to keep everyone clearly informed.

Finally, we would like to wish the very best of luck to Jemima in Year 8, who is representing herself and the school in the national final of the Rotary Young Chef competition this weekend – a fantastic achievement of which we are extremely proud!

Student Wellbeing Survey

Just before the Easter break, all students had the opportunity to participate in the second KSHS Wellbeing Survey of the academic year, which focused on relationships with peers and staff.

We are pleased to report that the results were overwhelmingly positive:

  • 97% of students said they feel safe in school and have positive relationships with their teachers, this is in line with previous survey results.
  • 92% reported that they feel a sense of belonging at KSHS.
  • 99% indicated that they have at least one friend in school.

During the school INSET day the year group teams carefully reviewed the results, and are now meeting with individuals to explore how we can further support the wellbeing of all students at KSHS.

Looking ahead, we remain committed to creating a positive and safe environment where every student feels valued and enjoys coming to school.

Geography Fieldwork at KSHS

The Year 9 Geographers have been busy in recent lessons carrying out fieldwork to support their learning. As part of their studying of the ‘Geography of Crime,’ the students collected primary data in Sleaford. They conducted their enquiries by identifying evidence of crime and methods of crime prevention. They interviewed members of the public to explore people’s views on the issues of local crime. Environmental quality surveys were conducted to assess how the environment may influence criminal behaviour.

We look forward to seeing the presentation of the students’ results and their conclusions.

PSHE

It was a busy end to Term 4 for our Key Stage 3 students, who participated in Stay Safe Days and Vaping workshops as part of the PSHE curriculum.

The sessions are delivered by established and experienced Stay Safe practitioners who engage and inform our young people by developing an awareness of situations that they may encounter either in school, at home, or the wider community.  Drug and alcohol use, gang recruitment, knife crime, online safety, fire safety and harmful behaviours in relationships are sadly all issues that our young people may encounter. Therefore, protecting themselves and each other through greater awareness and knowledge is vital; participating in interactive discussions and activities equips our young people to identify risk and danger and to confidently employ stay safe strategies and seek appropriate help and support if required.

Year 7 students wearing simulation goggles

Year 7 students have learnt how inhibitions, reflexes and decision making are all affected when taking drugs and alcohol; wearing simulation goggles safely mimics the visual disturbance and loss of co-ordination experienced when under the influence of substances.

Year 8 and Year 9 students have been learning about the dangers and misconceptions of vaping, whilst also discovering how peer pressure can play a large part in the vaping culture. The workshops are designed to increase student awareness and knowledge through discussion and activities.  To accompany the workshop there is a short informative video from Trading Standards which can be viewed here:

Tobacco Control – Young persons tobacco control work - Lincolnshire County Council

According to the World Health Organisation- Children on average are nine times more likely than adults to vape.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
