Dear Parent/Carer
This week's edition starts with a polite request to parents. We would really appreciate your support with parking arrangements at the end of the day if you collect your child from school by car. Since the public car park adjacent to the school changed ownership, there has been a significant increase in demand for parking in our visitors' car park: both from taxi companies transporting our more vulnerable learners, and from parents. Unfortunately, we can't offer this as a space for parents at the end of the day, especially as leaving the school car park by car leads to a significant risk to all students on foot leaving through the school gates.
Please be aware therefore, that if you do access this car park, you may not be able to exit the car park until the school gates and Jermyn Street have cleared (this normally takes around 10 minutes in order to protect the safety of our students). There are alternatives, of course. Using the local supermarket car parks as a meeting point for your child (one is a 2-minute pedestrianised walk for KSHS students) or asking them to meet you in a town location.
Please don't be offended if you are asked to wait before you leave, find your exit blocked or are asked to avoid using the school visitor's car park by one of the staff on duty at the end of the day. It's all in an attempt to keep our young people safe.
Thank you as ever for your support.

Headteacher

Creative Writing Success!
The English department are incredibly proud of Ella 8LMA, as she receives news that, after entering a Young Writers competition, her creative “mini saga” is due to be published. The book will showcase young writers’ writing and will be called Stranger Sagas – What Dreams May Come. A copy of this will remain in the National Archives of the British Library forever! Having read Ella’s entry, Mrs Jackson is very impressed with the tension and suspense that Ella has managed to create. Huge well done, Ella!

Year 12 Celebrate Stop Motion Success!
Our Year 12 Photography students have recently completed an exciting unit exploring the creative possibilities of stop motion animation. Using clay and paper to build characters, props, and miniature scenes, students brought their ideas to life through carefully planned frame-by-frame photography.
The results have been fantastic. Students demonstrated impressive creativity, patience, and technical skill as they animated their handmade models and paper elements to create engaging short films.
It has been wonderful to see students fully embrace the creative process, combining photography with hands-on making. Their dedication and attention to detail have truly paid off.

Students receive Extended Project Qualification Grades
|
|
Approximately 20 Year 13 students received their grades for an Extended Project Qualification after working on their projects during Year 12. The students had the freedom to select areas of study that interested them and worked on them throughout the year, with the majority choosing to write a dissertation. There were a wide variety of topics, covering areas such as Sociology, Psychology, History, Law, Fashion, Education, and Science. The students produced some excellent work and achieved some very high grades, as well as developing higher level skills and knowledge, giving them a great start in preparing for life after Sixth Form.

War of the Roses Conference
On Tuesday 3 March Year 12 and 13 Historians had the opportunity to hear six Historians deliver lectures on various aspects of the War of the Roses. These ranged from topics on Kingship in Late Medieval Kingship delivered by Professor John Watt from the University of Oxford to the Rebellions against Henry VII delivered by Sean Cunningham one of the leading historians in this field. This was followed by a formal debate on 'Was Edward IV more successful due to Lancastrian weaknesses or Yorkist strengths?' Students got to vote for which side of the debate they thought the strongest; Yorkist strengths won with 52% of the vote. More than 30 school took part with over 700 students in virtual attendance. The final session of the day was a presentation from a lecturer at the University of York about studying History at university. This is such a fantastic opportunity for students hear eminent historians and is great additional to their classroom learning.

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
