Term 3 - 16 January 2026

Dear Parent/Carer

Happy New Year to all our parents, carers and friends of the school if it doesn't already feel too late to say that!

Term 3 can be the toughest part of the school year for students, with dark starts and ends to the school day, as well as lots of focus on curriculum coverage (and Non-Examined Assessment for our GCSE and A level students).

For that reason, we were particularly keen to analyse our Student Wellbeing Survey results and to share them with you. Do read on to find out more.

Much of what we know about building self-esteem, resilience and confidence in our students is providing them with opportunities to engage in activities outside the classroom. Sometimes just for fun, sometimes to provide extra challenge and always to help students  discover a passion. I have enjoyed hearing the students' excitement about our forthcoming school production 'Much Ado About Panto', for example and encourage you to buy tickets for what will be a fantastic performance on Wednesday 25 and Friday 27 February.

I was also very proud of KSHS students who spoke so eloquently to BBC Look North about their views on banning social media for under 16-year-olds in the wake of Australia's decision to do so. Keep your eye on BBC Look North in the next day or so.

Finally, thank you to all parents who attended the Year 12 parents' evening this week. If you haven't filled in the survey yet, please click here to access it. Next Wednesday it's the turn of Year 11 parents. Just a reminder that this event is face to face in school and not online.

Headteacher

Student Wellbeing Survey

In December 2025, students completed the Anna Freud Emotional Health and Wellbeing Survey, helping us understand how they are feeling at school. The results are reassuring and positive. Most students report low levels of emotional difficulty and manageable stress, alongside strong psychological wellbeing. Students feel happy, safe, and supported: 89% enjoy coming to school, 98% feel safe, and almost all report positive friendships and relationships with staff. These findings match or improve on summer results and reflect our ongoing focus on wellbeing through strong relationships, wellbeing lessons and access to trusted adults and specialist support. Working together with families remains key to helping every child thrive. If you would like to find out more about the results, please follow this link.

Library and Literacy News

As we settle into 2026, making time to read more books is often featured on many peoples’ lists of new year intentions. This year is a particularly exciting time for both established and new readers as The National Year of Reading is launched in mid-January. This important UK-wide campaign led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust will aim to tackle declining reading habits by inspiring people of all ages to find or rediscover the joy and relevance in reading, promoting it as a modern and personally meaningful activity which integrates with digital life.

Key Aspects of National Year of Reading 2026:

  • Go All In: The central message encourages people to delve deeper into their passions (music, history, gaming, science, baking, crafting etc.) through reading in any format (books, audiobooks, digital).

National Year of Reading at KSHS:

  • In March we will be holding our own Reading Festival, launching with World Book on Thursday 5 March followed by a month of events, activities and competitions.
  • Although we are already established as a school that values and loves to read- we can always do more.  The library will continue to play a key part throughout the year in promoting the benefits of reading, advising on book choices and through access to diverse and inclusive collections, help students to develop their independent and intentioned reading.
  • Access to a professional librarian, library and library collections will remain at the heart of our school reading culture, whilst our teaching staff will also continue to highlight how reading links to every subject, and that reading for pleasure & learning are fundamental to lifelong wellbeing and learning outcomes.

LRC/Library- Homework Club Guidelines

Monday – Thursday 3.30-4.30

Friday 3.30-4.00

  • All students are welcome to attend the library homework club, a drop-in club that commences immediately after the 3.30 school bell until 4.30. (4 on Fridays) There is no need to book in advance for this club.
  • Students are not permitted to leave site at 3.30 and then return to homework club at a later point in the hour.
  • It is ok to leave homework club, and therefore the school site earlier than 4.30 if, for instance, students have transport arrangements in place.
  • All students must sign in with the library staff member on duty and cross their name out on the sign-in sheet when they leave. This includes Year 12 and Year 13 students.
  • All resources are available, including access to the computers and printer. Students may spend time either studying independently or in a group, reading, borrowing or quietly doing a jigsaw.

Attendance in the library after school is a continuation of the school day and therefore the mobile phone policy remains in place.  Mobile phone use is only permitted to arrange and be in contact with parents and carers regarding transport and pick-up arrangements and with the permission of the supervising member of staff.

BBC 500 Words competition Mrs Gibson is once more a judge for this year’s prestigious 500 words competition.  School librarians from across the country are called on every year to judge the thousands of entries for the preliminary round of this popular creative writing competition.  The finalists will be revealed in a special program to be broadcast on the BBC on World Book Day, March 5th.  HRH Queen Camilla will host this annual celebration that encourages children from ages 5-11 to create a story in just 500 words.  Many of our students have previously taken part in this competition and gone on to participate in both our Scribes and Young Journalists clubs- further developing their enjoyment and skills in creative writing.

Congratulations to Niamh, Jassia, Matilda, Louise, Merryn, Elise, Joyce, Emma, River, Phoebe, Jessica and Zara who have all completed their Library Captain training and been awarded their Librarian Badge.  Our student volunteers make important contributions to the library and reading culture in our school and are fantastic advocates and role models.  Well done and keep up the good work!

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
