Term 2 - 19 December 2025

Dear Parent/Carer

We've made it! .....all the way to the end of term 2 and students (and staff!) are certainly ready for a rest. Festive cheer, it turns out, is pretty tiring, but that's because huge amounts of energy, kindness, planning and participation have been poured into the last two weeks. I hope students have felt a real sense of belonging as we have introduced Year 7 to some of our festive traditions and Year 13 have marked their 'last times'. Traditions include the table decorating competition during Christmas Lunch, the tutor group secret Santa events, singing our interactive version of The Twelve days of Christmas in our last afternoon celebration assembly, as well as the Music Department's Christmas concert, our Senior prizegiving and our St Denys' carol concert.

Staff gathered after school this week to mark the end of term and the opening of The Hub, our newly refurbished area of the school complete with sensory room and a suite of calm working spaces for our most vulnerable students to use.  Our roofing contractors are on schedule with our big programme of work that began in September, meaning the first phase of the schools £1.25 million programme will be complete by February.

I look forward to sharing all the news and plans for terms 2 and 3 in January. Whatever you do, I wish you and your family all the very best for the festive season.

Merry Christmas and a very happy 2026!

Senior Prizegiving

Monday saw last year's Year 11 and Year 13 students return to the school for our annual Senior Prizegiving event. Our guest speaker, Hannah Broughton MBE,  awarded prizes and certificates to successful students, as well as delivering a speech to assembled students, staff, parents and invited guests. As an ex- KSHS student, she spoke about her career since leaving the school, as a charity founder and entrepreneur. Members of the senior student team spoke too of the school's successes in 2025, including our recent news of again being listed in The Sunday Times 'Parent Power' publication as one of the most successful state schools in the East Midlands.

Rotary Club Young Chef Competition

Focus on Food!

It has been a busy term in the food room, with 9 Young Chefs battling it out on Saturday 21 November for the title of ‘Sleaford’s Young Chef of the Year’. This was a fantastic morning of skills and presentation. We were lucky to have visiting chefs from RAF Coningsby in attendance as judges along with members of the Sleaford rotary club.

The standard was very high; each student worked really well at timing. The judging took longer than usual, due to the closeness of the marks.

Jemima in Year 8 took the title, with Anya in Year 10 coming a very close second.

These two students will travel to Loughborough College in February to compete in the next round for the Regional Final.

I would like to thank all the parents /carers who support this event, for their time and patience as students practise and need driving to venues on Saturday mornings.

Enrichment

This term we have had 16 students taking the enrichment option in the food room, developing skills, budgeting and creating awareness of recipe adaptations.

The students have selected a range of sweet and savoury dishes to focus on, often working in pairs or teams to allow the budget to stretch to more challenging dishes. It has been wonderful to see the engagement, enthusiasm and skills being developed.

The term ended with a paired Yule Log challenge, with students having fun rolling Swiss rolls and developing decoration techniques.

I look forward to welcoming the next group in term 3.

Interact Club - Senior Citizens' Christmas Party

{item_alt_tag}

On Wednesday 10 December, the KSHS Interact Club once again welcomed senior citizens from the Sleaford area to their annual Christmas Party. We had approximately 40 guests this year and they said it was the best one yet! It really was a fantastic team effort and I am extremely proud of all the students involved. Mrs Pankhurst’s Year 10 class planned a delicious feast for our guests; they costed the food, created a shopping list within budget and spent the morning cooking and baking some amazing food! Interact students planned the party itself, including beautifully decorated tables, Christmas jokes, chocolate treats, dozens of cups of tea and coffee, a great quiz, bingo (Jemima is the best bingo caller ever!) and a raffle with never-ending prizes! We also had excellent musical performances throughout the afternoon from an array of talented musicians. I lost count of the number of compliments I received about what a credit to the school our lovely students are.

Thank you to all the students involved as well as to Mrs Parrott, Mrs Pankhurst, and Mrs Mitchinson for all their support in making it such a success. Thank you also to everyone that donated raffle prizes.

Imogen sings with National Youth Choir

On Monday 8 December, I had the opportunity to spend the day at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, working with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and secondary schools from Nottinghamshire. We learnt two ensemble pieces in 4-part harmony to perform at the Inspire Christmas Concert, which was celebrating its 10th year. I also performed three pieces with Inspired Voices; the County Choir that I sing with. Singing is a huge passion of mine and I was so grateful to be part of this amazing event.

Congratulations to Mrs Stokes and Mr Cassidy

At KSHS, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. We are proud to champion lifelong learning and to invest in high-quality professional development for all staff, ensuring the very best experiences for our students.

National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are a key part of this, with pathways spanning leading teaching, teacher development, behaviour and culture, Senior Leadership and Headship.

We are delighted to celebrate two fantastic achievements: congratulations to Mr Cassidy on gaining his National Professional Qualification in Senior Leadership, and to Mrs Stokes on gaining her National Professional Qualification in Headship. These accomplishments reflect real dedication, expertise and a shared commitment to excellence at KSHS.

Talent Show

The House Talent show final took place on Friday 12 December. This year was probably the most varied in terms of talents on show, from musical performances and dance routines, to Rubix Cube and Diabolo skills. Our finalists were Clare, Year 8 playing a grade 5 clarinet piece, Drew, Year 13 playing the guitar and singing, 4 Year 10 students performing a dance routine to a Katseye song, Crescentia, Year 7 showing off her skills with the Diabolo, and Gemma, Year 11 playing the piano.

This year’s winners were the Year 10 students who performed their dance routine again in Friday afternoon’s whole school assembly. Second place went to Gemma, Drew and Crescentia from came equal third. Prizes were awarded to them all for their participation and success.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.

A message from Head of Year 11

As we approach the end of this term, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible efforts of our Year 11 students during their recent mock examinations. This period is always a significant milestone, and I am immensely proud of the resilience, commitment, and maturity they have demonstrated.

These qualities are essential as we move toward the summer GCSEs, and it has been inspiring to see so many of them rise to the challenge. As we move forward, I cannot stress enough the importance of maintaining attendance. There is simply no substitute for being in the classroom, learning directly from our experienced teachers. Every lesson counts, and consistent attendance will make a significant difference in your child’s confidence and performance in the summer exams.

For now, I encourage all students to take a well-deserved break over the Christmas holidays. They have worked incredibly hard, and rest is just as important as study. Please allow them time to recharge, spend quality moments with family, and return in January ready to build on the fantastic progress they have made.

Miss N Byrne

Head of Year 11

As we approach the festive season, we want to ensure that all our students stay safe and well during the holidays. Please take a moment to read poster below, which includes important tips and guidance on staying safe online, out and about, and at home.

Your support in reinforcing these messages will help keep our young people happy and secure over the break.

Wishing you and your family a joyful and restful Christmas break.
