Term 1 2025-26

Dear Parent/Carer

As we reach the end of a busy term 1 I'd like to thank all parents and friends of the school for their support. You have been cooks for European week of languages, taste testers for the Young Chef competition, and parent taxis to facilitate your child's attendance at after school sports and performing arts clubs, amongst many other things. We never underestimate how busy it is being a parent of a student at the High School! I hope that your child has found something this term, either inside the classroom or as part of our wide extracurricular offer, to pique their interest.

My particular thanks this week go to Ms Natley and students for a tremendous first World Fair at KSHS. In education we talk about the importance of belonging. 5% of our students have English as an additional language and come from diverse backgrounds. We all have so much to learn about the ever more connected world we live in and it was uplifting and fascinating to stop at the range of stalls at the World Fair and learn about some of our students' cultural heritage. We enjoyed dance displays, henna demonstrations, food tasting and some wonderful modelling of national dress: students were able to talk to each other and share some wonderful insights into their culture. The map in reception gave all students a chance to take part in a celebration of places that are important to us and it was fascinating to see how KSHS students have connections all over the globe. We hope you enjoy browsing some of the photos in this newsletter and on our social media feed of the event.

Finally, congratulations to Mrs Hunt (Teacher of PE and form tutor to 10AH) who this week gave birth to 9lb 15oz baby Alfie. We wish her and her family all the best.

Mrs J Smith
Headteacher

Year 11 Geography Fieldtrip to Hunstanton

The Year 11 Geographers have had a busy start to the academic year visiting Hunstanton in North Norfolk to collect primary data for their GCSE enquiries. We were so lucky that the sun shone down in ‘Sunny Hunny’ and the students were able to appreciate the Geography of this stretch of coastline.

On the beach the students considered how processes of weathering, rockfalls and erosion affect the profiles of the iconic Hunstanton cliffs. They practised their maths skills by using trigonometry to calculate the height of the cliffs before measuring the height of sand next to the groynes and pebble length.

In the town the students conducted land use mapping, counted pedestrians and interviewed local people, visitors and shop owners to find out their views on whether the High Street of the town should be pedestrianised.

We all enjoyed the doughnuts/fish and chips/ice creams at lunchtime!

We are now looking forward to evaluating our data collection and data presentation methods back in class.

Introducing the 2025-26 Student Council

We are proud to announce the newly elected Student Council for the 2025–26 academic year. The Council is a democratically elected body made up of students from across all year groups, chosen by their peers to represent their voices.

The role of the Student Council is more than symbolic: members work together with staff to identify area of improvement to school life, propose solutions, and bring about real change in school life. We strive to ensure that student perspectives are heard in decision-making - the Council plays a key role in strengthening our school community through student voice and action. In the past, the Student Council have helped to shape our school rewards system and shared their opinions on uniform and the range on offer in the Dining Room. We are excited to see what they achieve this year.

Congratulations to all those elected – and thank you to every student who took part in the voting process.

Smartphones - Advice for Parents

Why Parental Controls on Phones Matter

In today’s digital age, smartphones are an everyday part of life for teenagers, offering access to learning, communication, and entertainment at their fingertips. While this technology brings many benefits, it also comes with risks that can impact students' safety, wellbeing, and academic focus. That’s where parental controls play an important role.

What Are Parental Controls?
Parental controls are tools available on most smartphones and apps that allow parents and carers to manage and monitor how their children use their devices. These settings can limit screen time, restrict access to inappropriate content, control app downloads, and monitor online activity.

Why Are They Important?

Online Safety:

Young people may unintentionally access harmful content or interact with strangers online. Parental controls help reduce these risks by filtering websites, limiting app access, and monitoring activity.

Healthy Screen Time:
Excessive phone use, especially late at night, can negatively affect sleep, concentration, and mood. Setting screen time limits supports a healthier balance between screen use and rest or study time.

Support for Learning:

Phones can be a distraction from homework and revision. Parental controls can help students stay focused during study times by blocking social media or gaming apps at certain hours.

Emotional Wellbeing:

Social media can sometimes contribute to anxiety, peer pressure, or negative self-image. Monitoring app usage helps parents start conversations with their children about healthy online habits.

Encouraging Responsibility:

Using parental controls isn't about spying, it's about guiding. As students grow, these tools can be gradually adjusted to promote independence and responsible digital behaviour.

In Summary
Parental controls are not about limiting freedom, they’re about creating a safer, more supportive digital environment for young people to thrive in. We encourage families to regularly talk about phone use at home and explore the tools available to make smartphones both useful and safe. To help with this we have included parent guides from #wakeupwednesday for both android and ios systems.

Interact Club

Rotary Shoe Box Appeal

As usual, the Interact Club will be organising the Shoe Box Appeal over the next few weeks. We are hoping to provide lots of small gifts for those who might otherwise have very little. We would be very grateful if forms could work together to provide at least one shoe box of gifts per form. Students could bring in items or forms could have a collection and then go shopping to buy the gifts all at once. Shoe boxes must be the ones provided by the Rotary Club and it is really important that they have the £2 attached for the price of the box and postage, otherwise they can’t be sent.

Information about contents is below and our deadline is Friday 7th November. Thank you very much in advance for your efforts!

Year 9 Visit the National Space Centre

On Friday 3rd October, our Year 9 students enjoyed an exciting and educational trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The visit offered a fantastic opportunity to explore the wonders of space and deepen their understanding of science beyond the classroom.

Throughout the day, students explored a wide range of interactive exhibits, learning about everything from the history of space travel to the latest innovations in satellite technology and planetary exploration. A highlight of the trip was the immersive planetarium show, Astronaut Education, which gave students a first-hand look at what it takes to become an astronaut — from intense physical training to the science behind space missions.

The trip was not only informative but also inspiring, sparking many interesting discussions and questions. We’re proud of how engaged and enthusiastic our students were throughout the day.

A big thank you to the staff who organised and supported the visit — and well done to Year 9 for representing our school so brilliantly!

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
