Term 1 - 3 October 2025

Dear Parent/Carer

If you were a parent of a child at the school last year you will have been invited to be part of our consultation regarding the merger of the two Sleaford Grammar Schools with the Community Inclusive Trust (CIT). That merger, between The Robert Carre Trust and CIT, officially happened this week. Do read the press statement here https://www.lincolnshireworld.com/education/landmark-merger-sees-towns-grammar-schools-unite-with-another-academy-trust-5342295.

CIT will work in collaboration with our existing staff to maintain all that is outstanding about the High School whilst providing even more opportunities for all our young people. This term our staff have already benefitted from additional specialist training and we have opened our doors to local CIT primary schools. My thanks to Mrs Fairhead and the team in Science who have been busy organising an experience for Year 5 pupils who will get to use the facilities of a secondary school lab, and Ms Padden and the Drama team who are already rehearsing students for the Christmas pantomime with a special matinee performance scheduled for primary pupils.

In other news, we are preparing for several key school events this term that we would love you to be part of. The Year 7 settling In evening takes place on Thursday 9 October. Year 7 parents get to meet their child's form tutor and hear presentations from senior staff on various aspects of secondary school life. The Year 11 Sixth Form Information evening takes place on Wednesday 22 October and the Year 6 Parents Open Morning on Wednesday 15 October. We hope to see many of you there. More details follow in this newsletter and via letters home.

KSHS Alumni 'Old Girls Association' Lunch

Marith, Head Girl, and I had the privilege of addressing over 30 members of the KSHS alumni association on Saturday 21 September. Several of the group were marking 30 years since they left the school and entertained us with tales of strict teachers and school rules!

Thank you to Mrs Parrot for a sumptuous lunch and to the OGA committee for their warm welcome. The alumni group contribute annually (both as individuals and as an organisation) to prizes for the Senior Prizegiving as well as supporting at least 2 students every year with a contribution to their Year 1 living expenses at University.

Celebrating Diversity at KSHS

Celebrating Diversity at KSHS

We’re getting closer to the KSHS World Fair, taking place on

World Inclusion Day – Friday 10th October.

Thank you to all at home who have already helped students prepare to showcase their cultural heritage through food, items, clothing, language trivia posters, and more. We have representation for a wide range of cultures and countries, from Scotland to Malta, Zimbabwe to Japan! Our participating students are eager to share their stories and experiences with their classmates and beyond and we can’t wait to share the celebration with you in the next newsletter and online through our official KSHS social media accounts.

Henna Application – Parent Permission Required
As part of the celebration, there will be a henna table run by Year 9 and 10 students, offering a small henna finger design to those who wish to take part. Henna has been used for thousands of years in many cultures across South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. Traditionally, henna is applied to the skin in intricate patterns during special occasions like weddings, festivals, and religious celebrations. It is often used as a symbol of joy, beauty, and cultural identity.

If you would like to give permission for your child to receive a small henna design, please add a clear signed permission note to their planner in the week beginning 6th October.

Important Notes: The natural henna that will be used contains the following ingredients: henna powder, terpineol, clove oil, benzyl, alcohol, xanthan gum and purified water. *This henna does not contain phenylenediamine which is the chemical ingredient used in “black henna” that some people can be allergic to.

  • Henna will be applied only to students with completed parent/carer permission.
  • Henna designs will be simple and small, applied by students experienced at applying henna.
  • Henna usually fades naturally within 1–2 weeks.
  • Due to time constraints and high interest, not all students with permission are guaranteed a design—access will depend on demand during the afternoon.

Global Connections – Whole School Activity
In the lead-up to the fair, from Monday 6th October, a world map will be displayed in school.

All staff and students will be invited to place a location pin on a country they are closely connected to.

This is an interactive opportunity to show and celebrate just how many different corners of the wide world are represented in our school community.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support in making the first KSHS World Fair a special event!

On Friday 26th September (well, all week really!) we celebrated European Day of Languages. It was a week to celebrate different languages and cultures and learn how important languages are both for careers and for fun!

Staff and pupils took part in a variety of activities including the following:

Mrs Samworth, Mrs Ellison and Mrs Stokes led assemblies about why we learn languages and where they can take you.

In the dining room, pupils were given free tasters of a variety of European foods which were snapped up very quickly! They tried Frikadellen (German meatballs), French Brie, Italian Panettone and German Stollen.

In the library there was a quiz where students had to guess the mystery language

Throughout the week, staff wore badges with greetings in a wide variety of languages and pupils competed to find as many as they could. Winners to be announced very soon!

Pupils experienced languages in some of their other lessons too where teachers greeted pupils and wrote dates or titles in a variety of languages.

All of Year 10 took part in a postcard competition where their task was to design a postcard to promote European Day of Languages on one side and to show off their knowledge of languages on the other side. Winners are being decided this week.

We once again held the Year 7 Great European Bake Off – some of the efforts of the very talented bakers are below. Thank you to Year 7 (and to parents!) for your fantastic efforts. There were lots of wonderfully creative ideas and it has never been so difficult to decide on winners. The delicious cakes were sold off by our 6th form linguists in aid of Lives – Lincolnshire’s First Responders and raised a magnificent £166.82. When judging, we looked at the quality of the cake, as well as the design and how well they fitted in with the European and languages theme. W

We finally decided on 7 winners – the winners of the ‘Best Presentation’ category were Isla in &L, Ebony in 7A and Ella-Rose in 7A.

Winner of the ‘Best Traditional Recipe’ was Roxanne in 7A and the winner of the ‘Best Traditional Recipe & Creativity’ was Annabelle in 7A. ‘Best Use of Languages’ winner was Isla in 7A and ‘Best On Theme Creativity’ went to Harriet in 7A. Well done to absolutely everyone, we wish we could mention you all!

Library and Literacy News

Our school library is a fantastic place to explore and borrow books that link to the Personal Development Curriculum.  By reading from either fiction or non-fiction collections, young people can explore the topics covered throughout the school year.

Benefits of Reading in a Personal Development Curriculum

  • Fosters self-awareness and empathy: Reading about characters and situations different from their own helps students understand their own emotions and the perspectives of others, developing compassion and empathy.
  • Builds critical thinking and understanding: Engaging with texts allows students to explore complex topics, question ideas, and understand the nuances of moral and social dilemmas, equipping them to make informed choices.
  • Enhances emotional and mental well-being: Reading can provide strategies for coping with challenging feelings and contributes to understanding and managing mental health, fostering resilience and a sense of control.
  • Promotes personal growth and confidence: Exposure to new ideas, knowledge, and diverse perspectives in books helps students refine their own existing skills and builds confidence in their ability to navigate the world.
  • Provides a safe space for exploration: Reading allows students to safely discuss challenging topics such as peer pressure, relationships, and societal issues in a structured, educational environment.
  • Develops a strong moral and social compass: By exploring characters' decisions and the implications of their actions, students develop an understanding of right and wrong and learn to consider moral implications in their own lives.

Our Monday Library Captains team have been curating a display to support Black History Month.  This year’s theme is Standing firm in power and pride; highlighting the contributions made by black people who have shaped global history and continue to pioneer and campaign for unity and growth.

Our whole school assemblies this week have been led by Mr Cassidy-Subject Leader English, in celebration of National Poetry Day, which takes place annually on the first Thursday in October. Poetry is proven to enhance cognitive functions such as memory and vocabulary and connect its readers to shared human experiences.  Reading and writing poetry offers a form of mindfulness and provides a unique way to explore and understand the world and oneself.

D&T News

Year 9 Textiles had an exciting lesson recently where they showed great design collaboration skills by working as teams to model a 1960’s inspired skirt on a mannequin using paper. They did an excellent job and thoroughly enjoyed being creative.

Sporting Success

Women’s sporting success continues to inspire us with the win for the England Women’s Football team at the Euros in Switzerland, later to be followed by the England Women’s Rugby team winning the World Cup!

The Euros and World Cup have been so inspirational for girls to watch what their role models can achieve.

Mrs Stacey was very excited to be interviewed by one of her role models for BBC Sport at England’s opening game of the World Cup in Sunderland.

Jodie Ounsley (Fury from Gladiators) and former England 7’s Rugby player, asked Mrs Stacey and KSHS students Ruby and Jemima questions about what this means for girls and women’s sport for now and for the future. They were really surprised to see their photo posted on Jodie Ounsley’s Instagram page the next day!

Jemima (Year 8) had the honour of carrying the Australian flag to lead out the team in their match V USA.

Elizabeth took part in dressage final on Saturday winning both classes on her pony Royal and horse Timmy which resulted in her taking 1st place in the Ryder Saddles Summer League on Royal and 3rd place on Timmy in the junior section. This was followed by pony club testing on Sunday and achieving her C test.

Wellbeing for All

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
