Dear Parent/Carer
There are too many KSHS highlights from the past two weeks to mention in this, the last regular newsletter of the academic year! On Tuesday, Mr Rooke, the Year 8 tutor team and members of the learning support team led our first Year 8 trip to Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre. Read on below for more.
Some of us on the trip were a little bleary-eyed from the night before when we had admired Year 11 in all their finery at the Year 11 Prom at Kelham Hall. Elsewhere, a group of Year 7 headed to Boston to take part in the Touch to Twickenham introduction to Rugby programme. And of course a huge well done to all students who completed the 10-mile, 2025 school sponsored walk. Read on to see how much you helped raise!
Thanks to parents for all the early morning or after-school pickups during this busy term. If your child doesn't choose to take part in whole year trips, activities are always planned in school by teachers to ensure their day is worthwhile too. We were disappointed to get phone calls telling us 12 of the 14 remaining Year 8s were poorly and Year 10s participation in the school walk was a little disappointing this year too.
These events are designed to build rounded and collaborative young people who feel a sense of community and a pride in their collaborative efforts. Thanks to all those parents who encouraged, chivvied and supported their child to fundraise, get involved and take a full part in the life of the school. It's really appreciated, especially when so much effort is put in by staff to make the experiences safe, inclusive and enjoyable.
With just 8 days of term left there's still lots to look forward to. Year 7 and Year 10 have Geography fieldwork and History trips, Sports Day is on the horizon and the last day of term is reserved for Junior Prizegiving and the famous KSHS end-of-year picnic! A letter with all the details should be in your inbox!
Wishing you and your family a safe, re- energising and sunny summer break!

Year 8 visit the National Water Sports’ Centre at Holme Pierrepont
|
|
|
113 students from Year 8 went to the National Water Sports’ Centre at Holme Pierrepont on Tuesday 8th July for the day. They experienced paddle boarding, kayaking, raft building, the sky trail and mini golf. They showed determination, resilience and team work to complete the activities and lots of them were out of their comfort zones across the day.
I am extremely proud of them for their behaviour, willingness and determination to be the best version of themselves. I’m also grateful to the wonderful staff team who accompanied them, kayaked / paddle boarded with them and encouraged them to try new things. Please enjoy a selection of dry and wet photos from our day.

On Tuesday 8 July, we were lucky enough to welcome back Lily Gregory, a former KSHS student, to deliver an assembly to Years 9, 10, 12. After studying Physics, Maths, and Business in the Sixth Form, Lily studied BEng General Engineering at Kings College London. She was president of the KCL Womxn in STEM, was awarded the Cadzow Smith Prize in 2025, and named TargetJobs Undergraduate Engineer of the Year 2024. She will shortly be taking on a role of Graduate Design Manager at Kier.
It's fair to say she has achieved a lot in the STEM field already and is a fantastic role model for our students. Lily shared her journey in STEM, talked all things university, spoke about the need for diversity in STEM, along with discussing the huge variety of careers within STEM. She also shared some valuable advice with our students about how they can prepare for and pursue a career in STEM.

As the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions end, we can reflect on the successful challenges our 102 students have faced and have overcome. They have shown great strength, resilience and teamwork.

During June, KSHS and Carre’s had their silver assessed expedition on the weekend in the Peak District. It was an incredibly fun 3 days, even if the weather had some slight fluctuations to it. Most people had previous experience from Bronze and our practice expedition, so we were all prepared and ready to face the next 3 days. We got to the Peak District at around 8:30 and met with our instructors from Lupine who helped us with our map and gave us tips as well. We then all left and began our walks, which were around 18km routes. Everyone had to work as a team and take regular breaks, so we had enough energy and enjoyed the views of the extremely sunny countryside on the hot Friday. Once we got to the campsite, we set up our tents and cooked with our Trangia’s.
Day 2 was taken on again by everyone until it started raining when we got back to camp, so we had to quickly put up our tents and seek shelter in them until the rain stopped. We even got time to get some ice cream!
Finally, on Day 3 there were very motivated groups as we were finally going home. The rain followed us however, and most of the day was spent completely soaked but still enjoying the views the trail provided us. We reached our meeting spot, where we all got on the coach and were all filled with pride. It was challenging, but extremely memorable and fun.

Our Gold Duke of Edinburgh assessed expedition took us to the rugged trails near Pen-y-Ghent, one of the famous Three Peaks, where we spent four tiring days covering 75km of moorland.
My team's navigation skills were on point; we didn't get lost once. Although we all took a few minor stumbles at some point as we trekked through terrain much steeper than we're used to in Lincolnshire. Despite the bites and burns, spirits were high, and the laughs came easily — whether it was from blisters, bizarre campsite meals, or trying to guess whose backpack smelled the worst by Day 3. We all came back with stronger legs, better friendships, and a deep appreciation for dry socks.
All in all, we survived Gold D of E and Pen-y-Ghent with our feet mostly intact, gratitude for the flat lands of Lincolnshire and two disposable cameras worth of memories. Gold DofE: completed it!

House Assembly - Creativity with 7HK
|
|
|
On the Thursday 3 of July we wrapped up our 2024-25 House Assemblies programme, finishing with a spectacular effort from 7HK who delivered on the theme of ‘Creativity’. This programme has seen forms work together to host an assembly – ideally with minimal teacher input! – initially covering core KSHS values such as ‘resilience’ ‘commitment’ ‘respect’ and ‘trust’. We have seen some brilliant presentations over the course of the year, from the dramatic to the informative. We can’t wait to see what our form groups come up with next year, when they will be given a new theme to host.
For our final student-led assembly of the year all members of 7HK contributed to showcase how they, individually, are creative. They organised a fantastic walkthrough of their different skills and artistic creations or performances, some of which you can see in the pictures below.
Overall, it was a joyful way to experience the theme, and a real celebration of how creativity can be unique and special for each of us!
Well done, 7HK!

Every Wednesday afternoon, Year 12s attend Enrichment sessions as an opportunity to develop skills independent of their A-levels. There are many choices: sports, debating, reading club etc, but the option I have taken part in is Cookery!
In these sessions we develop our culinary skills whilst also learning to adjust ingredients to keep to a budget (a key skill for University). This included a trip to Sainsburys where we had £2 per head to cook a main meal. Products ranged from internationally inspired Bao buns and pizza, to the classic of chicken and chips.
Sometimes we add a bit of a competitive spirit to our baking, with a Christmas Swiss Roll competition and a recent challenge to create a healthier alternative to our favourite fast food snack. This saw teams using techniques like air-frying and baking instead of oil frying, to reduce their intake of saturated fats.
My personal favourite was making an afternoon tea with small cakes, sandwiches, and scones- a great way to relax after the Year 12 mocks!
Cookery is super because you get to challenge yourself (through bakes like profiteroles and croissants) whilst also getting a tasty treat at the end of it! Many thanks to Mrs Pankhurst for running such an amazing enrichment option!

It has been a super busy term for students in History in Term 6. First of all, our congratulations to Marith who entered and won second prize in a national essay writing competition! Here is what Marith had to say about it:
I took part in the 1st annual Karen Becher memorial essay competition, run by the National Holocaust Museum. This competition is aimed at sixth form students, and this year’s title was ‘Does free speech build or break a community?’. I really enjoyed the opportunity to consider different perspectives and answers to this question, before reaching my own conclusion that free speech isn’t without its dangers but it is required to bring about change in society, receiving joint 2nd place. This was an amazing opportunity that I would highly recommend to anyone!
Well done Marith!!
Secondly, our Y12 students had a wonderful day at Bishop Grosseteste University on their NEA Day. The students were offered the opportunity to tour the campus and experience University life, as well as receive practical tips for writing their coursework essays and the amazing opportunity to download some articles to help them from the University library. Thank you to Mr Dennis for facilitating this opportunity for our students!
Of course, Year 7 have also enjoyed their annual outing to Warwick Castle to support their understanding of the Norman Conquest and the Medieval period. We had a fabulous time walking the walls of the castle, exploring the Kingmaker Exhibition, climbing the original motte and enjoying the Falconry and War of the Roses Jousting shows. It was a super day out, thank you again to Mr Dennis for his organisation of the trip! For more of an in depth review please have a look at the report from some of our wonderful Young Journalists.
We are excited to round off the year by taking Year 10 to Lincoln Castle to support their History Around Us unit at GCSE!

One of Emily’s (7MAP) artworks has been selected for exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, in the Silesian district of Poland. This is a highly respected university-level institution specialising in the Arts, and the exhibition was a significant event with a very selective entry process. Only the best pieces from a limited group of students were chosen to be displayed.
Emily has been attending online art lessons every Sunday with the Academy, where she has been learning various techniques under the guidance of a university professor. It is testament to Emily’s hard work that this progress has been made and a thrill that her work was recognised in such a prestigious setting.

Year 10 Rio de Janeiro talk
|
|
On Thursday 26 June the Year 10 Geographers welcomed Paddy Mack into their classrooms to listen to an informative presentation about his experience of volunteering in a favela in the city of Rio in Brazil. As part of their GCSE Geography course, the students learn about the social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities facing the city, so Paddy’s talk provided a most interesting and informative personal insight. A former student of Carre’s Grammar School, Paddy is currently taking time out from his studies to complete a gap year. His volunteering was part of a project to support people living in the slums, helping with the teaching of English and sport. It was clear that Paddy had greatly enjoyed his six-week placement and the knowledge he shared will really complement the students’ learning in the classroom. Our thanks go to Paddy for this relevant and most interesting presentation!

Year 8 visit Bass Maltings
|
|
This term the Year 8 Geography students have been learning about issues of urban change. To support their learning, they visited the Bass Maltings site in Sleaford. Built between 1901 and 1907, the former brewery is now derelict but holds huge regeneration potential.
Students discussed the physical and human reasons explaining why Sleaford was chosen as the site for the brewery. They carried out environmental quality surveys, drew labelled sketches and considered the social, economic and environmental impacts of regeneration. Back in the classroom the students are taking on the role of urban planners, creating and presenting creative suggestions about how the site could be regenerated in a sustainable way. We look forward to hearing their ideas!

Our Year 9 and 10 Sports Leaders were magnificent contributors to the Crew Community Ganes held last Friday at Sleaford Rugby Club. Organised by the Sports Outreach Team, the students led activities, motivated primary school participants and represented KSHS brilliantly. The event brings together local primary and secondary schools to enjoy a day of activity and community.

Staff are invited to nominate students who have demonstrated a Growth Mindset in the past few weeks. This might have been in lessons, in clubs, tutor time or simply around school. Please note we already award bi-annual subject badges and merits for good academic work, effort and improvement. These Growth Mindset nominations recognise those who show resilience (academic or otherwise); who aren’t afraid to get things wrong and learn from it; those who have a go, take themselves out of their comfort zone or show that even if a task is tough, they will persevere.
